Estonian Music Days
Estonian Music Days ( et, Eesti muusika päevad) is a music festival which focuses on Estonian contemporary music. Since 1993 the festival take place annually and in spring. The festival is organized by Estonian Composers' Union in collaboration with Estonian Music Information Centre ( :et) and with other institutions. First festival took place in 1979 in Tallinn under the auspices of Estonian Composers' Union. First festival lasted 10 days and during the festival, 18 concerts, 8 theatrical performances, press conference were presented. In 1981 the festival was organized as ''Tallinn Music Days''. Since 1991, the festival bears the name of Estonian Music Days and is organised annually in springs since 1993. Estonian Composers' Union
Estonian Composers' Union (abbeviation ECU; et, Eesti Heliloojate Liit) is an Estonian creative union which encompasses professional composers and musicologists in Estonia. The chairman of ECU is Märt-Matis Lill. Since 2005, ECU is a member of the International Society of Contemporary Music The International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) is a music organization that promotes contemporary classical music. The organization was established in Salzburg in 1922 as Internationale Gesellschaft für Neue Musik (IGNM) following th ... (ISCM). As of 2021, ECU has 120 members. Tallinn
Tallinn () is the most populous and capital city of Estonia. Raimo Kangro
Raimo Kangro (21 September 1949 Tartu – 4 February 2001 Ruila, Harju County) was an Estonian composer. He composed mainly instrumental works and operas. In 1968 he graduated from Tallinn State Conservatory in composition speciality. 1989-2001 he taught at Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. 1993-2000 he was the director of Estonian Music Foundation. Since 1973 he was a member of Estonian Composers' Union. He died in 2001. He is buried at Tallinn Forest Cemetery Metsakalmistu (meaning ''Forest Cemetery'') is a cemetery in the Pirita district of Tallinn. Timo Steiner
Timo Steiner (born 6 May 1976 in Tallinn) is an Estonian composer. In 1999, he graduated from Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre in composition speciality. In 1997, he founded Bowed Piano Ensemble, and was also its artistic director. Ãœlo Krigul
Ülo Krigul (born 7 November 1978 in Tallinn) is an Estonian composer. In 1997 he graduated from Tallinn Music High School. In 2006 he graduated from the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre specialising in composition. He has been a music organizer; from 1995 to 1999 he belonged to the staff of the jazz festival Jazzkaar. From 2005 to 2014 he was one of the artistic directors of the Estonian Music Days. He has also been a member (being a keyboard player or arranger) of several rock and jazz ensembles, e.g. Compromise Blue and Contus Firmus. Since 2003 he has been a member of the Estonian Composers' Union. Helena Tulve
Helena Tulve (born 28 April 1972) is an Estonian composer. Born in Tartu, she studied composition at the Tallinn Secondary Music School under Alo Põldmäe and from 1989 to 1992 at the Estonian Academy of Music with Erkki-Sven Tüür, being the latter's sole student of composition thus far. In 1994 Tulve graduated with the Premier Prix from Jacques Charpentier's composition class at the Conservatoire Superieur de Paris. Between 1993 and 1996 she furthered her knowledge of Gregorian chant. She has also attended György Ligeti’s and Marco Stroppa’s summer courses. Tulve belongs to the younger generation of Estonian composers who, in contrast to the neo-classicist tradition of rhythm-centeredness, create music which focuses on sound and sonority.
