Esso Golden Tournament
The Esso Golden Tournament was a golf tournament on the British PGA circuit from 1961 to 1967. It was played in a round-robin format at the Moor Park Golf Club in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, England. The event was sponsored by Esso, and was cancelled in 1968 when they terminated their sponsorship following disagreements with the PGA. There were 15 competitors in each tournament who played each of the other 14 in an 18-hole match play contest. Most matches were played as a three-ball with three players playing a match against one another, each player playing two distinct matches. Some matches were played as ordinary singles match play. Two points were awarded for each match won while halved matches earned one point. Prize money for each tournament was £5,700. Rickmansworth
Rickmansworth () is a town in southwest Hertfordshire, England, about northwest of central London and inside the perimeter of the M25 motorway. The town is mainly to the north of the Grand Union Canal (formerly the Grand Junction Canal) and the River Colne. The town of Watford is to the northeast. Rickmansworth is the administrative seat of the Three Rivers District Council. The confluence of the River Chess and the River Gade with the Colne in Rickmansworth inspired the district's name. Goodall Palm Beach Round Robin
The Goodall Palm Beach Robin Robin was a golf tournament on the PGA Tour from 1938 to 1957. It was also known as the Goodall Robin Robin and the Palm Beach Robin Robin. The sponsors were the Goodall Company (later Goodall-Sanford Co.) and its subsidiary, the Palm Beach Clothing Co. The purse for the tournament was $5,000, with $1,000 going to the winner, from 1938 to 1941, increased to $10,000/$2,000 in 1946, and increased again to $15,000/$3,000 in 1949. Sam Snead won the event five times including both the first and last events. Format The tournament featured an unusual round robin format. From 1938 to 1946, the field consisted of 15 players. They would play seven rounds in five threesomes, a total of 126 holes. A player earned or lost points on each hole, in a match play style, based on his score versus his two opponents for that round. George Will (golfer)
George Duncan Will (16 April 1937 – 4 December 2010) was a Scottish professional golfer. A consistent tournament player around the world with a fine swing, George Will played in the 1963, 1965 and 1967 Ryder Cup's. He was one of the select number of golfers chosen to play in the televised Shell's Wonderful World of Golf series, defeating reigning USPGA champion Dave Marr at Turnberry in 1966. After his playing days, he became a teacher which included a spell as Belgian National Coach in the early 1990s. Christy O'Connor Snr
Patrick Christopher "Christy" O'Connor (21 December 1924 – 14 May 2016) was an Irish professional golfer. He was one of the leading golfers on the British and Irish circuit from the mid-1950s. O'Connor won over 20 important British and Irish tournaments and finished in the top 10 in the Open Championship on 10 occasions. Later he had considerable success in seniors events, twice winning the World Senior Championship. In team events he played in 10 successive Ryder Cup matches and played in 15 Canada Cup/World Cup matches for Ireland, winning the Canada Cup in 1958 in partnership with Harry Bradshaw. Peter Alliss
Peter Alliss (28 February 1931 – 5 December 2020) was an English professional golfer, television presenter, commentator, author and golf course designer. Following the death of Henry Longhurst in 1978, he was regarded by many as the "Voice of golf". In 2012 he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in the Lifetime Achievement category. Between 1952 and 1969, Alliss won 20 professional tournaments, including three British PGA Championships, in 1957, 1962 and 1965. He had five top-10 finishes in the Open Championship, coming closest in 1954 at Royal Birkdale when he finished four shots behind the champion Peter Thomson. Harry Weetman
Harry Weetman (25 October 1920 – 19 July 1972) was an English professional golfer. Weetman won many tournaments on the British PGA circuit in the pre-European Tour era and won the Harry Vardon Trophy for lowest stroke average in 1952 and 1956. He finished in the top-10 at The Open Championship six times. Weetman played in the Ryder Cup in 1951, 1953, 1955, 1957, 1959, 1961 and 1963 and had a 2-11-2 win–loss–tie record, with both of his wins coming in singles matches. He captained the team in 1965. Weetman died in Redhill hospital on 19 July 1972 after being involved in a car accident on the Caterham bypass on 14 July. Bernard Hunt
Bernard John Hunt, MBE (2 February 1930 – 21 June 2013) was an English professional golfer. Hunt was born in Atherstone, Warwickshire. He turned professional in 1946 and was a leading player on the European circuit in the 1950s and 1960s. He topped the Order of Merit, which was then points-based, in 1958, 1960 and 1965. The best season of his regular career in prize money terms was 1963, when he won £7,209. He was past his peak by the time the formal European Tour was introduced in 1972, but finished in the top twenty on the money list in 1973. He played on the European Seniors Tour in for its first seven seasons (1992–1998) but his opportunity to make an impact at this level was limited as he was sixty-two by the time the tour was founded. Jimmy Hitchcock (golfer)
James Hitchcock (1930 – 25 December 2015) was an English professional golfer. Hitchcock was born in Bromley. He won several major professional tournaments including the 1960 British Masters and the 1965 Agfa-Gevaert Tournament. He was selected as a member of the Great Britain and Ireland Ryder Cup team in 1965, losing all three of the matches he played. David Charles Thomas (16 August 193427 August 2013) was a Welsh professional golfer and renowned golf course architect. Thomas was one of Britain's leading golfers during the 1950s and 1960s with many tournament victories around Europe, including the News of the World Match Play and the Belgian Open (golf), Belgian, Dutch Open (golf), Dutch and French Open (golf), French Open championships. Hennessy Round-robin Tournament
The Hennessy Round-robin Tournament was a 12-man round-robin golf tournament on the British PGA circuit contested in 1964. It was one of two round-robin events during the season, the Esso Golden Tournament being the other. In essence, the Hennessy Round-robin was merely a change in format for the Hennessy Tournament, a 72-hole stroke play tournament which ran from 1957 to 1965. It was played at the Clandeboye Golf Club near Bangor, County Down, Northern Ireland, which had been the venue for the Hennessy Tournament since 1962. Total prize money was £1,500. The tournament involved teams of three from each of the home nations, with every player completing eleven 18-hole matches with points awarded for matches won or halved. Royal Gold Tournament
The Royal Gold Tournament was a golf tournament on the British PGA circuit contested in 1962. It was played in a 12-man round-robin format at the Murcar Links Golf Club, Bridge of Don, Aberdeen, Scotland. Ralph Moffitt won the event with 18 points, 3 ahead of the rest of the field. It was the second round-robin event of the season, following the Esso Golden Tournament. The competitors played each of the other 11 in an 18-hole stroke play contest. Matches were played as either four-balls or three-balls, so that 5 rounds of golf were contested, one in which they played three opponents and four in which they played two opponents.
