Esplanadi
Esplanadi ( sv, Esplanaden), colloquially known as Espa, is an esplanade and urban park in downtown Helsinki, Finland, situated between the Erottaja square and the Market Square. It is bordered on its northern and southern sides by the Pohjoisesplanadi (''Norra Esplanaden'', North Esplanadi) and Eteläesplanadi (''Södra Esplanaden'', South Esplanadi) streets, respectively. Aleksanterinkatu runs parallel to Esplanadi. Esplanadi is well known as a popular walking area, and street performances are also often held in the park. Designed by the architect Carl Ludwig Engel, the park was originally opened in 1818. In 1827, Engels Teater (the predecessor of the Swedish Theatre), the first theatre building in Helsinki, also designed by Engel, was erected in a corner of the park. Centered in the park is a statue of Johan Ludvig Runeberg, the national poet of Finland, by his son Walter Runeberg. Erottaja
Erottaja ( sv, Skillnaden), meaning "the separator", is a public square near the centre of Helsinki, Finland. Erottaja square has been selected as the official geographic " zero point" of Helsinki. Distances to all other cities in Finland are measured starting from here. In practice, the square functions as the meeting point of central Helsinki's two famous streets, Esplanadi and Mannerheimintie. The square is the western endpoint of Esplanadi, with the eastern endpoint being at the market square. Mannerheimintie, the longest and most famous street in Helsinki, begins at Erottaja and continues northwest, past the districts of Töölö and Ruskeasuo, until finally merging with a highway leading outside the city. Statue Of Johan Ludvig Runeberg
The Statue of Johan Ludvig Runeberg is a statue dedicated to the Finland-Swedish author, national poet and priest Johan Ludvig Runeberg (1804–1877), designed and sculpted by his son Walter Runeberg (1838–1920). The statue is located in the Esplanadi park in Helsinki. Sculpture Runeberg is depicted aged around of 55, dressed in a priest's coat. His right hand is on his chest, as if he would deliver a speech. By the foot of the pedestal there is a young woman wrapped in bearskin, symbolising Maiden of Finland. She is holding a laurel wreath and an inscription with the words of three verses of the Finnish national anthem in Runeberg's native language Swedish. The memorial offers no evidence of the identity of the person it depicts, since it was considered to be self-evident at the time. Kolmikulma
Kolmikulma ( sv, Trekanten; literally meaning "Triangle"), also known as the Diana Park, is a small, rectangular triangular-shaped park located in the Kaartinkaupunki district in the city center of Helsinki, Finland. It is limited by the Yrjönkatu, Uudenmaankatu and Erottajankatu streets. The park was renovated in 2006 and 2007. The Kolmikulma Park is located at the intersection of the three districts; although the park belongs to the Kaartinkaupunki district, there is the Punavuori district just southwest of the quarter and the Kamppi district to the northwest. The triangular nature of the park is due to its location on the border of two grid pattern areas in different directions. Market Square, Helsinki
The Market Square (Finnish: ''Kauppatori'', Swedish: ''Salutorget'') is a central square in Helsinki, Finland. It is located in central Helsinki, at the eastern end of Esplanadi and bordering the Baltic Sea to the south and Katajanokka to the east. HSL maintains a year-round ferry link from Market Square to Suomenlinna, and in the summer there are also private companies providing ferry cruises, both to Suomenlinna and to other nearby islands. Savoy is a restaurant in Helsinki, Finland, located on the Eteläesplanadi street. Engels Teater
Engels teater ('Engel Theatre') was a historic theatre in Helsinki in Finland, active between 1827 and 1860. It was the second theater in Finland after '' Bonuviers Teater'' in Åbo, and the first theatre in Helsinki. It was located on Esplanaden at the intersection with Mikaelsgatan and was the predecessor of the Swedish Theatre. The theatre was built to house the travelling theatre companies performing in Helsinki, being either Swedish language companies touring Finland, or German language companies on their way to Saint Petersburg. The building was a small wooden house designed by Carl Ludvig Engel in the corner of the Esplanadi. The theatre building was used by travelling theater companies. Swedish Theatre
The Swedish Theatre ( sv, Svenska Teatern) is a Swedish-language theatre in Helsinki, Finland, and is located at the Erottaja ( sv, Skillnaden) square, at the end of Esplanadi ( sv, Esplanaden). It was the first national stage of Finland. History The first theatre in Helsinki, '' Engels Teater'', was completed in 1827. The wooden building designed by architect Carl Ludvig Engel was located in the corner of Mikaelsgatan and Esplanaden. At the time the theatre was opened it had no permanent actors and many of the actors who performed in the theatre during that time were en route to Saint Petersburg. Gunnar Finne
Johan Gunnar Finne (4 April 1886 – 17 September 1952) was a Finnish sculptor. The architect Elna Kiljander became a single mother after a brief marriage with Finne from 1918 to 1926. Finne's best-known work is the memorial for the author Zachris Topelius in Helsinki. Finne entered the memorial competition arranged in 1928 with an entry titled "Fact and Fable" and won the competition. The finished bronze sculpture was unveiled in 1932 in the Esplanadi Park in central Helsinki. His other works include war heroes statues in Hollola (1941), Karkkila (1948) and Jyväskylä (1922).
