Escárcega Municipality
Escárcega is one of the 11 municipalities in the Mexican state of Campeche. The municipal seat, and largest settlement, is the city of Escárcega. Geography The municipality of Escárcega borders to the north with the municipality of Champotón, to the east with the municipality of Calakmul, to the south with the municipality of Candelaria, and to the west with the municipality of Carmen. It covers 4,569.64 km², accounting for 8.0% of the state's total surface area. History The municipality was created on 1 January 1991. It took its name from its municipal seat, which was in turn named for Tlaxcalan railwayman Francisco Escárcega, who built the Ferrocarril del Sureste that runs from Coatzacoalcos, Ver., to Campeche, Camp. Carmen (municipality)
Carmen is one of the 11 municipalities that make up the Mexican state of Campeche. It is situated at the south-west of the state, on and around the Laguna de Términos. The municipal seat and largest settlement is Ciudad del Carmen. As of 2015, the population was 248,303. The name "Carmen" is in honour of 16 July, the feast of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, after the date in 1717 when Spanish colonial authorities finally expelled the pirates from the island now known as Isla del Carmen. Don Samuel
Donald Allen Samuel (February 16, 1924 – November 23, 2010) was an American football player who played at the defensive back and halfback positions. Early years Samuel was born in Hood River, Oregon, in 1924. He graduated from Hood River High School in 1942 and enrolled at Oregon State College where he played college football for the Oregon State Beavers in the fall of 1942. His college education was interrupted by service in the Navy during World War II. While in the Navy, he played for the 1943 Iowa Pre-Flight Seahawks football team that compiled a 9–1 record (the sole looss by one point to national champion Notre Dame) and was ranked No. 2 in the final AP poll. He earned his pilots' wings five months after the war ended. After the war, Samuel returned to Oregon State where he played for the 1946 and 1947, and 1948 Oregon State Beavers football teams. San Francisco de Campeche (; yua, Ahk'ìin Pech, ), 19th c., also known simply as Campeche, is a city in Campeche Municipality in the state of Campeche, Mexico on the shore of the Bay of Campeche of the Gulf of Mexico. Both the seat of the municipality and the state's capital, the city had a population at the 2010 census of 220,389, and the municipality had a population of 259,005. The city was founded in 1540 by Spanish conquistadores as San Francisco de Campeche atop the pre-existing Maya city of Can Pech. The Pre-Columbian city was described as having 3,000 houses and various monuments, of which little trace remains. Coatzacoalcos
Coatzacoalcos () is a major port city in the southern part of the Mexican state of Veracruz, mostly on the western side of the Coatzacoalcos River estuary, on the Bay of Campeche, on the southern Gulf of Mexico coast. The city serves as the municipal seat of the municipality of the same name. It is the state's third largest city, after Veracruz City and Xalapa. Ferrocarril Del Sureste
The Ferrocarril del Sureste , commonly known as Ferrosur, is a railway that serves the southeastern regions of Mexico. The company was formed in 1998 following the privatization of Mexico's railways. Ferrosur took over the southeast concession. This includes the line between Mexico City and Mexico's busiest Gulf of Mexico/Atlantic Ocean port at Veracruz. Francisco Escárcega
Francisco Escárcega Márquez (2 January 1896 – 22 July 1938) was a builder of railroads in Mexico and fought in the Mexican Revolution. He was born in Nanacamilpa, Tlaxcala, and opened up areas in southern and eastern Mexico with railways. In 1938, he was in an aircraft crash in Palenque, Chiapas, while conducting aerial surveillance for a new railway. He survived the crash but died later of his injuries in Villahermosa, Tabasco.
