Carmen (municipality)
Carmen is one of the 11 municipalities that make up the Mexican state of Campeche. It is situated at the south-west of the state, on and around the Laguna de Términos. The municipal seat and largest settlement is Ciudad del Carmen. As of 2015, the population was 248,303. The name "Carmen" is in honour of 16 July, the feast of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, after the date in 1717 when Spanish colonial authorities finally expelled the pirates from the island now known as Isla del Carmen. History and geography The municipality of Carmen borders to the north with the Gulf of Mexico; to the west with the municipality of Palizada; and to the east with the municipalities of Champotón, Escárcega and Candelaria. Campeche is a state on the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico that is divided into thirteen municipalities. According to the 2020 Mexican Census, Campeche is the third least populous state with inhabitants and the 17th largest by land area spanning . Municipalities in Campeche are administratively autonomous of the state according to the 115th article of the 1917 Constitution of Mexico. Isla Aguada
Isla Aguada is a town in the Carmen municipality, in the state of Campeche, Mexico. The town is located in the tip of the Palmar Peninsula, about 40 km from the seat of the Carmen municipality, Ciudad del Carmen, and 90 km from the capital of the state, Campeche. Isla Aguada is surrounded in the south by the Sabancuy River and the Laguna de Términos and in the north by the Gulf of Mexico. As of 2010, the population of Isla Aguada consisted of a total of 6,204, of which 3,205 were male and 2,999 female. History Isla Aguada was a refuge for pirates after attacking shipments or nearby ports until 1762, when Governor Don Bernardo Sáenz Montero directed a regiment in order to send off the pirates. This mission was successful, as merchandise was recovered and some prisoners were taken. Ciudad Del Carmen, Campeche
Ciudad del Carmen is a city in the southwest of the Mexican state of Campeche. Ciudad del Carmen is located at on the southwest of Carmen Island, which stands in the Laguna de Términos on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. , Ciudad del Carmen had a population of 169,466, up from the 2005 census of 154,197. In July 2006, Ciudad del Carmen celebrated its 150th anniversary as a city. The city is nicknamed "The Pearl of the Gulf". Ciudad del Carmen was a small city mostly devoted to fishing until the 1970s when oil was discovered in the region; since then it has grown and developed substantially.
