Ernie Farrow
Ernest Farrow (November 13, 1928 – July 14, 1969) was a jazz bassist who occasionally played other instruments. His half-sister was Alice Coltrane. Early life Farrow was born in Huntington, West Virginia, on November 13, 1928. He started on piano before adding bass and drums. In his teens he had piano lessons from an uncle, Charles Lewis, who was a professional pianist. During high school he formed his own bands. Later life and career Farrow's career as a professional musician began in the early 1950s, playing with Terry Gibbs in 1954 and Stan Getz the following year. He then played with Yusef Lateef, recording with him during the period 1957–64. For Lateef, he also played other instruments, including the rabat. Farrow performed in his own groups, and was bassist in pianist Red Garland's band in 1960. He died in a swimming accident on July 14, 1969. Alice Coltrane
Alice Coltrane (' McLeod; August 27, 1937January 12, 2007), also known by her adopted Sanskrit name Turiyasangitananda, was an American jazz musician and composer, and in her later years a swamini. An accomplished pianist and one of the few harpists in the history of jazz, she recorded many albums as a bandleader, beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s for Impulse! and other record labels. She was married to jazz saxophonist and composer John Coltrane, with whom she performed in 1966–1967. One of the foremost exponents of spiritual jazz, her eclectic music proved widely influential both within and outside the world of jazz. Coltrane's professional music career slowed from the mid 1970s as she became more dedicated to her religious education. She founded the Vedantic Center in 1975 and the Shanti Anantam Ashram in California in 1983, where she served as spiritual director. Live At Pep's
Live at Pep's is a 1964 album by the American Jazz tenor saxophonist and flautist Yusef Lateef. Other participating musicians in this album were bassist Ernie Farrow, pianist Mike Nock, drummer James Black and trumpeter Richard Williams. This live album was recorded at Pep's Lounge in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. More of Lateef's performances at Pep's from the end of June 1964 were issued on ''Club Date'' (ABC-Impulse! ASD 9310) in 1976 and later as an expanded 2-LP set titled ''The Live Session'' (IA-9353/2). The recordings were repackaged again for CD as two volumes in 1993 and 1999 as ''Live at Pep's''. Reception Ron Wynn stated in a review for AllMusic: "This mid-'60s concert was one of Lateef's finest, as it perfectly displayed his multiple influences and interests." Eastern Sounds
''Eastern Sounds'' is an album by jazz saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Yusef Lateef, recorded in 1961. The album features Lateef's continued exploration of Middle Eastern music, which were incorporated into his version of hard bop with a quartet featuring Barry Harris on piano. The opening track features Lateef on Chinese globular flute, generally called xun. The fusing of musical genres was not a new thing in jazz or for Lateef as his 1957 album ''Prayer to the East'' incorporated the shehnai and Middle Eastern influences in playing jazz standards. Aside from Lateef's original compositions, there are covers of themes from the films ''Spartacus'' and ''The Robe'', the last one being used as samples by Blockhead and Nujabes.
