Ernest Sykes (VC)
Ernest Sykes VC (4 April 1885 – 3 August 1949) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. VC action Sykes was 32 years old, and a private in the 27th (Service) Battalion (4th Tyneside Irish), Northumberland Fusiliers, British Army during the First World War when the following deed took place on Easter Monday, 9 April 1917 near Arras, France, for which he was awarded the VC. His battalion in attack was held up by intense fire from front and flank, and suffered heavy casualties. Private Sykes, despite this heavy fire, went forward and brought back four wounded. He then made a fifth journey and remained out under conditions which appeared to be certain death, until he had bandaged all those too badly injured to be moved. Ernest Sykes (cricketer)
Ernest Castle Sykes (31 May 1869 – 30 November 1925) was an English first-class cricketer. Sykes was a right-handed batsman who played primarily as a wicket-keeper. Sykes represented Hampshire in one first-class match in 1896 against the touring Australians. Dean was 0 * at the close of Hampshire's first innings and their second innings scored Sykes scored 5 *, leaving him with no batting average due to his not out scores. Sykes died in Bolsover, Derbyshire on 30 November 1925. His son Eric played for Derbyshire. Ernest Alfred Sykes (27 December 1915 – 1997) was an English professional footballer who made eight appearances in the First Division of the Football League playing for Birmingham. He played as a full back. Sykes was born in Temple Normanton, Derbyshire. He played for Sutton Town before joining Birmingham in March 1936. He made his debut on 10 April 1936, in a 2–2 draw at home to Manchester United.Matthews, p. 179. Sykes played only rarely over the next two seasons, and moved to Cardiff City Cardiff City Football Club ( cy, Clwb Pêl-droed Dinas Caerdydd) is a professional association football club based in Cardiff, Wales.
