Erik Refner
Erik Refner (born 14 January 1971) is a Danish photographer and former pentathlete, soldier, and model. He is best known for winning the World Press Photo of the Year award in 2002 as a student. He also won the Cavling Prize in 2009. Early life Refner was born on the 14th January 1971 in Copenhagen and grew up in the north of the city. As a teenager he travelled internationally, including living for three months in an Israeli kibbutz. Adult life In the 1990s, Refner was a sergeant in the Royal Danish army after which he spent one year as part of the Danish pentathlon team. He then worked as a model for seven years, before switching to photography after one of the photographers he was working with needed an assistant. He won the World Press Photo of the Year in 2002, while studying at the Danish School of Media and Journalism, which he attended from 1998 to 2002. Danish School of Media and Journalism ( da, Danmarks Medie- og Journalisthøjskole), or DMJX for short, is a Danish organization for higher education in, and a knowledge centre of, media and journalism. DMJX has two campuses; one in Copenhagen and one in Aarhus. In 2004, DMJX and Aarhus University established the Centre for University Studies in Journalism, which offers master's courses at university level. The World Press Photo of the Year award is part of the World Press Photo Awards, organized by the Netherlands, Dutch foundation World Press Photo. Cavling Prize
The Cavling Prize is a prestigious Danish journalist award. It is awarded annually in January to "a journalist or a group of journalists who have shown initiative and talent in the past year." It is generally considered the most prestigious prize for Journalism in Denmark. The Prize commemorates Henrik Cavling, founder of the Danish Journalists Confederation. The prize consists of 20,000 kroner and a statuette made by George Rode depicting Henry Cavling. Kibbutz
A kibbutz ( he, קִבּוּץ / , lit. "gathering, clustering"; plural: kibbutzim / ) is an intentional community in Israel that was traditionally based on agriculture. The first kibbutz, established in 1909, was Degania. Today, farming has been partly supplanted by other economic branches, including industrial plants and high-tech enterprises. Kibbutzim began as utopian communities, a combination of socialism and Zionism. In recent decades, some kibbutzim have been privatized and changes have been made in the communal lifestyle. A member of a kibbutz is called a ''kibbutznik'' ( he, קִבּוּצְנִיק / ; plural ''kibbutznikim'' or ''kibbutzniks''). In 2010, there were 270 kibbutzim in Israel with population of 126,000. The Royal Danish Army ( da, Hæren, fo, Herurin, kl, Sakkutuut) is the land-based branch of the Danish Defence, together with the Danish Home Guard.
