Eric Upshall
Eric Malcolm Thomas Upshall (born December 24, 1951) is a Canadian provincial politician, who served as a Saskatchewan New Democratic Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan from 1986 to 1999. He was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in the 1986 election in the constituency of Humboldt. cbc.ca. Legislative Assembly Of Saskatchewan
The Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan is the legislative chamber of the Saskatchewan Legislature in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. Bills passed by the assembly are given royal assent by the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, in the name of the King in Right of Saskatchewan. The assembly meets at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building in Regina. There are 61 constituencies in the province, which elect members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to the Legislative Assembly. All are single-member districts, though the cities of Regina, Saskatoon and Moose Jaw were in the past represented through multi-member districts, with members elected through Block Voting. 1999 Saskatchewan General Election
The 1999 Saskatchewan general election was held on September 16, 1999 to elect members of the 24th Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. The new Saskatchewan Party took more votes than any other party but the NDP took more seats, taking half the seats in the Saskatchewan Legislature. The NDP formed a coalition with five elected Liberal Party MLAs to hold majority government. Polls during the campaign indicated strong levels of support for the New Democratic Party government. However, facing the fallout of a poor crop growing season and a scandal involving the Crown Corporation electric utility SaskPower (Channel Lake), the New Democrat government of Premier Roy Romanow – challenged by the newly created Saskatchewan Party – lost a significant share of the popular vote; winning exactly half of the fifty eight seats in the legislature. Watrous (electoral District)
Watrous was a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of the province of Saskatchewan, Canada, in the area of Watrous, Saskatchewan, east of Saskatoon. Created as "Vonda" before the 2nd Saskatchewan general election in 1908, this constituency was redrawn and renamed "Watrous" in 1934. This riding was abolished and absorbed into the Arm River district before the 18th Saskatchewan general election in 1975. 1995 Saskatchewan General Election
The 1995 Saskatchewan general election was held on June 21, 1995 to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. The New Democratic Party government of Premier Roy Romanow was re-elected for a second term, although with a reduced majority. The Liberal Party – led by Lynda Haverstock – increased its share of the popular vote; adding 9 seats in the legislature to the two seats it held previously, and became the official opposition. Saskatchewan voters continued to punish the Progressive Conservative Party in the wake of prosecutions of former Progressive Conservative politicians for expense account fraud. Humboldt (electoral District)
Humboldt was a federal electoral district in Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1904 to 1953. When it was created in 1903, it was part of the Northwest Territories. When Saskatchewan became a province in 1905, Humboldt riding was in that province. It was abolished in 1952 when it was redistributed into Humboldt—Melfort, Mackenzie and Rosthern ridings. 1986 Saskatchewan General Election
The 1986 Saskatchewan general election was held on October 20, 1986, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. The Progressive Conservative government of Premier Grant Devine was returned for a second term with a reduced majority in the legislature. While the New Democratic Party managed to increase its share of the popular vote and significantly increase its presence in the legislature, former Premier Allan Blakeney's attempt to return to power was unsuccessful. Despite winning slightly more votes than the Tories, most of the NDP margin was wasted on landslide margins in Regina and Saskatoon. While the NDP won eight seats in Regina and eight seats in Saskatoon, they only won nine seats in the rest of the province. As a result, they were consigned to Official Opposition status for another term. Humboldt (provincial Electoral District)
Humboldt was a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, Canada. Located in central Saskatchewan, this constituency was one of 25 created for the 1st Saskatchewan general election in 1905. Incorporated as a city in 2000, Humboldt (pop. 4,998) was the largest centre in the riding. Saskatchewan New Democratic Party
The Saskatchewan New Democratic Party (NDP) is a social-democratic political party in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. It currently forms the official opposition, but has been a dominant force in Saskatchewan politics since the 1940s. The party is the successor to the Saskatchewan section of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), and is affiliated with the federal New Democratic Party. History Precursors The origins of the party began as early as 1902. In that year a group of farmers created the Territorial Grain Growers' Association. The objective of this group was to lobby for farmer's rights with the grain trade and the railways. The name was changed to the Saskatchewan Grain Growers' Association (SGGA) when Saskatchewan became a province in 1905.
