Eric Sykes (cricketer)
Eric Sykes (23 June 1906 – 7 December 1989) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire in 1925 and 1932. Sykes was born in Bolsover, the son of Ernest Sykes who had played cricket for Hampshire. Sykes made his first-class debut for Derbyshire in the 1925 season in June against Gloucestershire and made 50 in his first innings. In his next match he was at the wicket on 4 when Derbyshire won, but he made little impression in his last match of the season against Lancashire. Sykes turned professional after playing as an amateur, but did not get a chance to play as a professional for Derbyshire until the 1932 season. He then played two matches for Derbyshire and made 27 in the first of them. Sykes was a right-handed batsman and played 10 innings in 5 first-class matches with an average of 11.66 and a top score of 50. He bowled one over at the cost of 2 runs without taking a wicket. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1932 represents the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for sixty one years. It was their thirty-fourth season in the County Championship and they won six matches to finish tenth 1932 season Derbyshire played 28 games in the County Championship, and one match against the touring Indians on their first visit to England. Derbyshire won seven matches including the one against the tourists, but the season was marked by a number of draws and two abandoned matches. A. W. Richardson was in his second season as captain in 1932. Denis Smith was top scorer with three centuries. Tommy Mitchell took most wickets. In the match against Essex at Chesterfield Garnet Lee and Stan Worthington achieved a 6th wicket partnership of 212 which remains a Derbyshire record. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1925 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for fifty four years. It was their twenty seventh season in the County Championship and they won five matches to finish fourteenth in the County Championship. 1925 season Guy Jackson was in his fourth season as captain. All the club's twenty-four first class matches were in the County Championship. The team recovered from a poor season in the previous year with five wins, but with fewer draws the high number of losses left the team in fourteenth place. Garnet Lee was top scorer in his first season as a first-class player for Derbyshire. Arthur Morton took most wickets with 63. The most significant addition to the side was Garnet Lee who was to prove a valuable all-rounder over the next few years. Barnsley () is a market town in South Yorkshire, England. As the main settlement of the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley and the fourth largest settlement in South Yorkshire. Hampshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Hampshire. Hampshire teams formed by earlier organisations, principally the Hambledon Club, always had first-class status and the same applied to the county club when it was founded in 1863. Ernest Castle Sykes (31 May 1869 – 30 November 1925) was an English first-class cricketer. Sykes was a right-handed batsman who played primarily as a wicket-keeper. Sykes represented Hampshire in one first-class match in 1896 against the touring Australians. Dean was 0 * at the close of Hampshire's first innings and their second innings scored Sykes scored 5 *, leaving him with no batting average due to his not out scores. Sykes died in Bolsover, Derbyshire on 30 November 1925. His son Eric played for Derbyshire.
