Eric Baume
Eric Ehrenfried Baume OBE (29 May 190024 April 1967) was a New Zealand-born Australian based journalist, novelist, radio presenter, actor and television talk show host. Early life Eric Baume was born Frederick Ehrenfried Baume in Auckland, New Zealand in 1900. His father, of the same name, was a lawyer and politician; his mother, Rosetta Baume, was a teacher and community worker, and one of the first women to stand for Parliament in New Zealand. Eric moved to Sydney in the early 1920s and worked for as editor for several papers. At this time he developed what was to become a lifelong addiction to gambling, which kept his family in debt for decades. Career Baume wrote thirteen books, mostly novels, including ''Half Caste'' (1933). Film rights were purchased in 1946 by United Artists. He hosted a radio series titled ''This I Believe''. The ''Labor Daily'' was a Sydney-based journal/newspaper of the early to mid 20th century. An organ of the Australian Labor Party, it was published in Sydney by Stanley Roy Wasson after the ailing ''Daily Mail'' was absorbed by Labor Papers Ltd, who began publication under that name on 6 January 1922 with the strong support of Albert Willis and the Miners' Federation. Willis was managing director 1926–1931 and chairman 1924–1930 and one of the most powerful political figures in the state. After a few weeks the paper's name was changed to the ''Labor Daily'' and was a supporter of Lang Labor. In 1929 receivers sold '' Beckett's Budget'' to Labor Daily Ltd. The paper also became the major sponsor of the New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership from 1934, with the winners of the competition from 1934 to 1950 being awarded the Labour Daily Cup. Peter Erne Baume, AC (born 30 January 1935) is a retired Australian doctor and politician. He was a Senator for New South Wales from 1974 to 1991, representing the Liberal Party. He served as Minister for Aboriginal Affairs (1980–1982) and Minister for Education (1982–1983) in the Fraser Government. Early life and education Baume was born in Sydney, New South Wales and educated at North Sydney Boys High School and Sydney Grammar School. Baume graduated in 1959 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Sydney and then studied gastroenterology in the United Kingdom and the United States. He received an MB, BS at the University of Sydney in 1969. He was in private practice as a gastroentologist and physician at Royal North Shore Hospital before entering the Parliament of Australia. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service.
