Equal Rights (Latvia)
Equal Rights (ER; lv, Līdztiesība, russian: Равноправие) was a political party in Latvia, mainly supported by the Russian minority. ER was founded on the basis of the "Equal Rights" faction of the Supreme Soviet as a NGO in 1993. The Equal Rights faction () had been founded in April, 1990, after the 1990 Latvian parliamentary election. The NGO transformed into a party in 1996. Its leaders were MPs Tatjana Ždanoka and Sergejs Dīmanis. The organization participated in the 1994 municipal election and the 1995 legislative election within the Socialist Party of Latvia list. In 1998, ER joined with two other predominantly Russian parties, the Latvian Socialist Party and the National Harmony Party to found the alliance For Human Rights in United Latvia (; ForHRUL). The Socialist Party of Latvia ( lv, Latvijas Sociālistiskā partija, abbr. LSP; russian: Социалистическая партия Латвии) is a communist party in Latvia. It is positioned on the far-left on the political spectrum. It was formed in 1994 as a successor party to the Communist Party of Latvia, which was banned in 1991. The Latvian Russian Union (LRU, lv, Latvijas Krievu savienība, russian: Русский союз Латвии, Russkiy soyuz Latvii) (LKS) is a political party in Latvia supported mainly by ethnic Russians and other Russian-speaking minorities. The co-chairpersons of the Latvian Russian Union are Miroslav Mitrofanov and Tatjana Ždanoka. The party emphasizes issues important to the Russian minority in Latvia. The National Harmony Party ( Latvian: ''Tautas Saskaņas partija'', TSP; russian: Партия народного согласия) was a political party in Latvia. The party identified with social democracy. It supported further liberalisation of Latvian nationality law by granting citizenship to non-citizens who had lived in Latvia for at least 10 years. (The present law only allows Soviet-era migrants to apply for citizenship through a process of naturalization). It also supported expanding education in minority languages, particularly Russian.
