Enemies Of Women
''Enemies of Women'' is a 1923 American silent romantic drama film directed by Alan Crosland and starring Lionel Barrymore, Alma Rubens, Gladys Hulette, Pedro de Cordoba, and Paul Panzer. The film was produced by William Randolph Hearst through his Cosmopolitan Productions. Pre-fame actresses Clara Bow and Margaret Dumont have uncredited bit roles. The film is based on the novel of the same title by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez. Plot As described in a film magazine review, Alicia, an adventuress, has occasion to befriend a Russian prince with whom she flees to France. They are happily living together when the Prince sees her with her young son and, knowing nothing of his existence, mistakes him for a youthful lover and quits her. He and several friends form a club known as the "Enemies of Women'' and plan to have nothing more to do with them. Alan Crosland
Alan Crosland (August 10, 1894 – July 16, 1936) was an American stage actor and film director. He is noted for having directed the first feature film using spoken dialogue, '' The Jazz Singer'' (1927). Early life and career Born in New York City, New York to a well-to-do Jewish family, Crosland attended Dartmouth College. After graduation, he took a job as a writer with the ''New York Globe'' magazine. Interested in the theatre, he began acting on stage, appearing in several productions with Shakespearian actress Annie Russell. Crosland began his career in the motion picture industry in 1912 at Edison Studios in The Bronx, New York, where he worked at various jobs for two years until he had learned the business sufficiently well to begin directing short films. Helen Lee Worthing (1905 - 1948) was an American actress, mostly active in the era of silent film. Early years The daughter of a prominent businessman in Boston, Worthing was born in Brookline, Massachusetts. As a teenager, she received a prize for having the most perfect hands and arms in Louisville, Kentucky. Two years after that recognition, judges unanimously selected her as "the most beautiful woman in America" in a contest that had 10,000 entrants. Louis Wolheim
Louis Robert Wolheim (March 28, 1880 – February 18, 1931) was an American actor, of both stage and screen, whose rough physical appearance relegated him to roles mostly of thugs or villains in the movies, but whose talent allowed him to flourish on stage. His career was mostly contained during the silent era of the film industry, due to his untimely death at the age of 50 in 1931. Early life Born in New York City in 1880, he attended Cornell University, where he graduated with a degree in engineering. After graduation, he taught mathematics, including six years as an instructor at Cornell. He also worked as a mining engineer. Ivan Linow (born Jānis Linaus; November 21, 1888 – November 11, 1940), also known as Jack Linow, was a Latvian-born American wrestler, who became a character actor in American films during the silent and early sound film eras. Biography Born in Latvia on November 21, 1888, Linow began wrestling in the United States in 1918. Between 1918 and 1933, he participated in 92 matches, with a record of 38 wins and 23 losses. Linow's monikers in the ring were "the Cossack" and the "Russian Man-Eater". During his wrestling career, he faced other notable wrestlers of that era, such as Joe Stecher and Ed Lewis. Betty Bouton (September 10, 1891 - ?) was an American actress from Pennsylvania. She appeared in 16 films between 1919 and 1924, with her last film being the Samuel Goldwyn part-Technicolor production '' Cytherea'' (1924). Early years Bouton graduated from the University of Pennsylvania planning to be a social service worker, and she was a probation officer in several cities' juvenile courts. She also was an investigator for a charity organization and a social investigator for a psychological clinic. Acting attracted her attention, however, and she attended the Sargent School of Dramatic Art. Mario Majeroni (1870–1931) was an Italian-born American playwright and stage and film actor. Biography Majeroni came to the United States in 1906 and started acting on Broadway that year. Prior to coming to the United States he had lived and worked in Australia, where his parents had a successful dramatic company noted for one of the earliest stage adaptations of ''For the Term of His Natural Life''. In 1914 he started appearing in silent films after years of stage work. He never left the stage and alternated between Broadway and motion pictures.
