Empyrium
Empyrium is a German symphonic folk/ doom metal and (later) neofolk/ dark folk band. History Empyrium was founded in 1994 by Markus Stock (mostly using the pseudonym Ulf Theodor Schwadorf) and Andreas Bach, but later many other musicians participated. The band draws inspiration from nature. Empyrium are often referred to as a dark folk or apocalyptic folk band, expressing in their music sentiments akin to those expressed by some other 'legislators' of the genre, Forseti, Orplid, and Ulver (Kveldssanger). Like the Norwegian black metal band Burzum, Empyrium also used a Theodor Kittelsen drawing on one of their album covers ('' Where at Night the Wood Grouse Plays''). ''Weiland'' is the fourth album by the German symphonic folk/doom metal band Empyrium. It is the second acoustic album released by the band, and the first to be completely sung in German language. All their previous albums only contained English lyrics, even though two songs on the album Where at Night the Wood Grouse Plays have German names, i.e. 'Abendrot' ''(English: Sunset glow)'' and 'Wehmut' ''(English: Melancholy)'', which are instrumental tracks. Folk Metal
Folk metal is a fusion genre of heavy metal music and traditional folk music that developed in Europe during the 1990s. It is characterised by the widespread use of folk instruments and, to a lesser extent, traditional singing styles (for example, Dutch Heidevolk, Danish Sylvatica and Spanish Stone of Erech). It also sometimes features soft instrumentation influenced by folk rock. The earliest folk metal bands were Skyclad from England and Cruachan from Ireland. ''Kveldssanger'' (translated as ''"Twilight Songs"'') is the second studio album by Norwegian band Ulver, issued in March 1996 via Head Not Found. The album was recorded at Endless Lydstudio, Oslo, Norway in the summer and autumn of 1995, with Kristian Romsøe as engineer and co-producer. Background For ''Kveldssanger'', the second part of what has become known as Ulver’s “'' Black Metal Trilogie'',” the band expanded upon the quiet, folk-influenced acoustic elements present in their debut album, '' Bergtatt''. Theodor Kittelsen
Theodor Severin Kittelsen (27 April 1857 – 21 January 1914) was a Norwegian artist. He is one of the most popular artists in Norway. Kittelsen became famous for his nature paintings, as well as for his illustrations of fairy tales and legends, especially of trolls. Early life Kittelsen was born in the coastal town of Kragerø in Grenland, Norway. His father died when he was young, leaving a wife and eight children in difficult circumstances. Theodor was only 11 years old when he was apprenticed to a watchmaker. When at the age of 17 his talent was discovered by Diderich Maria Aall, he became a pupil at Wilhelm von Hannos drawing school in Christiania (now Oslo). Because of generous financial support by Aall he later studied in Munich. However, in 1879 Diderich Aall could no longer manage to support him, so Kittelsen had to earn his money as a draftsman for German newspapers and magazines.
