Emmet D. Boyle
Emmet Derby Boyle (July 26, 1879 – January 3, 1926) was an American politician who was the List of Governors of Nevada, 13th Governor of Nevada. He was a member of the Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party. Biography Boyle was born on July 26, 1879, in Gold Hill, Nevada, making him the first governor of Nevada to be born in the state. He was a mining engineer, and was the Governor of Nevada from 1915 to 1923. He also served as president of the Reno Chamber of Commerce. As governor, he gained prominence for his opposition to boxing. In 1918, he refused to allow Fred Fulton and Jess Willard to fight in the state. After retiring as governor, he served as publisher of the Nevada State Journal. Boyle died on January 3, 1926, in Reno, Nevada, Reno, Nevada, at the age of 46. Jess Willard
Jess Myron Willard (December 29, 1881 – December 15, 1968) was an American world heavyweight boxing champion billed as the Pottawatomie Giant who knocked out Jack Johnson in April 1915 for the heavyweight title. Willard was known for size rather than skill, and though held the championship for more than four years, he defended it rarely. In 1919, when he was 37 years of age he lost the title in an extremely one sided loss by declining to come out for the fourth round against Jack Dempsey, who became a more celebrated champion. Soon after the bout Willard began accusing Dempsey of using something with the effect of a knuckle duster. Dempsey did not grant Willard a return match, and at 42 years old he was KO'd, following which he retired from boxing, although for the rest of his life continued claiming Dempsey had cheated. Fred Tobias Fulton, nicknamed "The Rochester Plasterer", (April 19, 1891 – July 7, 1973) was an American heavyweight professional boxer. Biography He was born in Blue Rapids, Kansas on April 19, 1891. Fulton made his professional debut in 1913 and did not retire from boxing until 1933. Fulton began his boxing career in the early twentieth century. His final record was 83 wins (72 by KO), 17 losses and 4 draws. In 2003 he was named to Ring magazine's' list of 100 greatest punchers of all time. Fulton, although possessing a strong punch, had a checkered career against the other fighters of the era, and never landed a title fight. Tasker Oddie
Tasker Lowndes Oddie (October 20, 1870 – February 17, 1950) was an American attorney and politician who served as the 12th Governor of Nevada and a United States Senator. He was a member of the Republican Party. Biography Oddie was born on October 20, 1870, in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from New York University Law School with an LL.B. in 1895 and practiced law in New York until 1898, when he moved to Nevada to become the attorney and business agent for the wealthy Stokes family. He joined the Nevada Bar in 1898. Career Oddie moved to and made his fortune in the 1900 silver boom in Tonopah, becoming manager of the Tonopah Mining Company. He was the Nye County District Attorney from 1900 to 1902. He was a member of the Nevada State Senate from 1903 to 1906.
