Emilio Gancayco
Emilio Angeles Gancayco (August 20, 1921-July 28, 2009) was a Filipino lawyer who served as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines from January 12, 1987 to August 22, 1997. He was appointed by President Corazon Aquino. Personal life Emilio Gancayco was born in Orion, Bataan to Braulio Malimban Gancayco and Emilia Lim Angeles. He finished his secondary education from Jose Rizal Institute, High School with highest honors. He then graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Law in 1947, but not after his law studies were interrupted by World War II when he became part of the guerrilla movement in his hometown against the Japanese occupying forces. He is a member of Upsilon Sigma Phi The Upsilon Sigma Phi () is the oldest Greek-letter organization and fraternity in Asia. An associate justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines ( fil, Kasangguning Mahistrado ng Kataas-taasang Hukuman ng Pilipinas) is one of fifteen members of the Supreme Court of the Philippines, the highest court in the Philippines. The Chief Justice presides over the high court, but carries only one of the 15 votes in the court. Traditionally, the Chief Justice is deemed '' primus inter pares'' ("first among equals") among the justices. Until 1973, only men were appointed as Associate Justices to the Court. Cecilia Muñoz-Palma, an appointee of President Ferdinand Marcos, was the first woman to sit on the Court. Since then, 15 other women have been appointed as Associate Justices of the Supreme Court. Maria Corazon "Cory" Sumulong Cojuangco-Aquino (; ; January 25, 1933 – August 1, 2009) was a Filipina politician who served as the 11th president of the Philippines from 1986 to 1992. She was the most prominent figure of the 1986 People Power Revolution, which ended the two-decade rule of President Ferdinand Marcos and led to the establishment of the current democratic Fifth Philippine Republic. Corazon Aquino was married to Senator Benigno Aquino Jr., who was one of the most prominent critics of President Marcos. Orion, officially the Municipality of Orion (formerly Udyong), ( tl, Bayan ng Orion), is a 2nd class municipality in the province of Bataan, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 60,771 people. History 2019 Orion fire On January 29, 2019, a massive fire burned down over 900 houses in Sitio Depensa, Barangay Kapunitan, killing 1 person, injuring 50 persons, and affecting 1,018 families, or 6,131 individuals. The blaze was attributed to children who carelessly played with matches and afterwards mistakenly tried to douse the flames with gasoline. The fire was able to spread quickly since the sitio consisted mostly of bamboo houses, most of which stored gasoline for fishing boats. The town was then placed under state of calamity.
