Elz (Rhine)
The Elz is a river in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, a right tributary of the Rhine. It rises in the Black Forest, near the source of the Breg. The Elz flows through Elzach, Waldkirch and Emmendingen before reaching the Rhine near Lahr. Its length is approx. . The lower reaches of the Elz are by-passed by the Leopold Canal, a flood relief canal. Course The Elz rises north of Furtwangen in the area of the Brend and the Rohrhardsberg mountains (between the Furtwänglehof and the Kolmenhof) not far from the source of the Breg which is hydrographically the source of the Danube. In its upper reaches the Elz flows in a northerly direction, initially through a high valley with pasture land, bog and ice age glacial landforms. Then after a steep drop at the little '' Elz Falls'', it continues through a deeply incised, wooded and sparsely populated V-shaped valley. In the ''Oberprechtal'' valley it bends sharply towards the southwest. This is the start of the middle (actual) ...

Hörnleberg
The Hörnleberg is a mountain, , in the Central Black Forest in southern Germany. Its summit pyramid rises around 600 metres above the apex formed by the valleys of the Elz and the Wild Gutach. Currently (2012, after forestry work) it has a view of the Elz valley and the Upper Rhine Plain. At the summit is the pilgrimage chapel of Our Dear Lady (''Unsere Liebe Frau''), which was presumably built in the 8th or 9th century. The first record of the ''capella uf dem Hörnlin'' dates to the year 1469, in a prebendary occupancy book of the Diocese of Konstanz. According to legend, a blind man from the Alsace swore that if God gave him back his sight, he would build a chapel in honour of Mary on the first mountain that he saw. Two Ways of the Cross The Stations of the Cross or the Way of the Cross, also known as the Way of Sorrows or the Via Crucis, refers to a series of images depicting Jesus Christ on the day of his crucifixion and accompanying prayers. The stations grew ...

High Black Forest
The High Black Forest (german: Hochschwarzwald) is a touristic and geographical region in the south-west of the German federal state Baden-Württemberg, primarily in the Southern Black Forest. History of the name The term ''Hochschwarzwald'' originally became well known thanks to tourism. Winter sports and climatic spa resorts in the highlands of the Black Forest used it in advertising even before the First World War. Since the 1920s the term also found its way into literature about the region, albeit with variations in terms of its actual boundaries.Rudolf Metz: ''Zur naturräumlichen Gliederung des Schwarzwalds.'' In: ''Alemannisches Institut'' (publ.): Alemannisches Jahrbuch 1959, Schauenburg, Lahr 1959, pp. 23–26 Whilst some authors used the term just to describe the area around the Feldberg massif, others equated it to the whole of the Southern Black Forest and still others used it to refer to the highest part of the Central Black Forest southeast of the Elz valley (regi ...

Ice Age
An ice age is a long period of reduction in the temperature of Earth's surface and atmosphere, resulting in the presence or expansion of continental and polar ice sheets and alpine glaciers. Earth's climate alternates between ice ages and greenhouse periods, during which there are no glaciers on the planet. Earth is currently in the Quaternary glaciation. Individual pulses of cold climate within an ice age are termed '' glacial periods'' (or, alternatively, ''glacials, glaciations, glacial stages, stadials, stades'', or colloquially, ''ice ages''), and intermittent warm periods within an ice age are called ''interglacials'' or ''interstadials''. In glaciology, ''ice age'' implies the presence of extensive ice sheets in both northern and southern hemispheres. By this definition, Earth is currently in an interglacial period—the Holocene. The amount of anthropogenic greenhouse gases emitted into Earth's oceans and atmosphere is predicted to prevent the next glacial period for t ...

Hydrographically
Hydrography is the branch of applied sciences which deals with the measurement and description of the physical features of oceans, seas, coastal areas, lakes and rivers, as well as with the prediction of their change over time, for the primary purpose of safety of navigation and in support of all other marine activities, including economic development, security and defense, scientific research, and environmental protection. History The origins of hydrography lay in the making of charts to aid navigation, by individual mariners as they navigated into new waters. These were usually the private property, even closely held secrets, of individuals who used them for commercial or military advantage. As transoceanic trade and exploration increased, hydrographic surveys started to be carried out as an exercise in their own right, and the commissioning of surveys was increasingly done by governments and special hydrographic offices. National organizations, particularly navies, realized ...
