Éile
Éile (; sga, Éle, ), commonly anglicised as Ely, was a medieval petty kingdom in the southern part of the modern county of Offaly and parts of North Tipperary in Ireland. The historic barony of Eliogarty was once a significant portion of the kingdom. Overview The clan or people of Éile claimed descent from Cian, a younger son of Ailill Aulom and brother of Eógan Mór, and thus had kinship with the Eóganachta. It has been suggested that the Éile were actually of Laigin origin, and that they may in fact have been the rulers of the Cashel area before the rise of the Eóganachta, as suggested by their role in Eóganachta origin tales, such as the ''Senchas Fagbála Caisil''. Their name is also associated with ''Cruachán Brí Éile'' the original name of Croghan Hill. Ely Township, Michigan
Ely Township is a civil township of Marquette County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,952 at the 2010 census. Communities * Clarksburg was settled in 1862 along the Escanaba River. The Michigan Iron Company had a blast furnace here. It was platted in 1881. The post office closed in 1894. * Greenwood is an unincorporated community on US 41/ M-28 approximately three miles west of Ishpeming. Ely High School For Girls
Ely High School for Girls was a secondary school for girls which opened in 1905 at Bedford House, St.Mary's Street, Ely, Cambridgeshire. Bedford House was purchased for the school by the Isle of Ely County Council. History The school opened in May 1905 with thirty girl students under the supervision of the first Headmistress, Miss E.E.Fletcher. It was recognised formally as a public secondary school by the Board of Education in 1907. The school was based in Bedford House in St. Mary's Street in Ely. In 1957 the school was moved to a purpose built new building in Downham Road, Ely Nikolaus Pevsner, The Buildings of England, Cambridgeshire, Yale University Press, 2002, p.380 where the school operated until it was merged with Soham Grammar School Sixth Form to form the new City of Ely Sixth Form College in 1972. Ely Theological College
Ely Theological College was a college in Ely, Cambridgeshire, for training clergy in the Church of England. Founded in 1876 by James Woodford, Anglican Bishop of Ely, the college had a strong Anglo-Catholic tradition. Ely's "ritualistic" (i.e. "Catholic") tendencies were attacked by Mr Samuel Smith MP in a House of Commons debate in 1899. Because of its reputation for strong Anglo-Catholicism the clergy trained there had little hope of rising to senior positions in the church; the first one to become a diocesan bishop was Edward Wynn in 1941. (Eric Mascall in his autobiography expresses the opinion that there were few differences in doctrine or liturgy between Ely and the theological colleges of Cuddesdon and Lincoln.) Ely College is a secondary academy school located in Ely, Cambridgeshire. History In 1957 Ely High School for Girls moved out of the centre of Ely to an extensive site on Downham Road. St Audrey's Infant School was built nearby on the site around the same time. In 1969 a donation from the Catherine Needham Foundation, a local charitable trust set up in memory of Lady Catherine Needham, enabled the establishment of the Needham's County Secondary School adjacent to the High School. In September 1972 Ely High School and Needham's Secondary Modern School merged to become the City of Ely College as part of the change to comprehensive education in Ely. The Ely Professorship of Divinity was one of the professorships in divinity at the University of Cambridge. Ely railway station is on the Fen line in the east of England, serving the city of Ely, Cambridgeshire. It is from London Liverpool Street and is situated between and stations on the Fen line to King's Lynn. It is an important junction for three other lines; the Ely to Peterborough Line, the Ipswich to Ely Line and the Norwich to Ely line.
