Elvy Sukaesih (born June 25, 1951 in Jakarta) is one of the most popular dangdut singers in Indonesia, and has been dubbed the Queen of Dangdut. Sukaesih has a significant fan base in other Asian countries such as Japan. She has been a prolific recording artist since the late 1960s. Rhoma Irama
Raden Haji Oma Irama, better known as Rhoma Irama (born December 11, 1946), is an Indonesian dangdut singer, songwriter and guitarist of Sundanese descent. Starting from the late 1960s, he began his musical career as Rhoma Irama as a part of the pop band Orkes Melayu Purnama, pioneering several dangdut music elements. He then formed his band Soneta Group, achieving multitudes of musical successes with groundbreaking dangdut style which incorporates Western, Malay, and Bollywood influences. From the late 1970s, he began transforming into more Islamic-oriented style, commanding the religiously pious popular music culture. ''The Rough Guide to the Music of Indonesia'' is a world music compilation album originally released in 2000 in music, 2000. Part of the World Music Network Rough Guides series, the release covers a broad swathe of the music of Indonesia, both traditional and modern. The compilation was produced by Phil Stanton, co-founder of the World Music Network. Paul Fisher compiled the tracks and wrote the liner notes, and Duncan Baker coordinated the project. Critical reception The album met critical appraise upon release. In his review for AllMusic, Bret Love rose the subject of non-gamelan Indonesian music's obscurity in the West, calling the compilation an "accessible introduction to some ''very'' unfamiliar musical traditions".
