Ellesmere Port Gunners were an English Motorcycle speedway, speedway team in Ellesmere Port, Wirral Peninsula, Wirral, which operated at the Ellesmere Port Stadium from 1972 until their closure in 1985. History The inaugural league season for the team was during the 1972 British League Division Two season in which they finished in 15th place. The first track record on the 424 yard track was 76.0 seconds, set by John Jackson on 2 May 1972. The team continued to operate from 1972 until 1982 continuously competing in Division Two for 11 years, with a best place finish of 2nd in 1976. A rider died on the Ellesmere Port track on 3 December 1977. Stuart Shirley lost his life on a Saturday morning training school after a collision. The club was resurrected for one season in 1985 and went on to win the title during the 1985 National League season. 1974 British League Division Two Season
The 1974 British League Division Two season was the second tier of motorcycle speedway in Great Britain. It was the final season of British League Division Two before it was renamed as the New National League. Summary The league was again expanded by one team from 18 to 19 teams. Weymouth Wizards were the new addition to the league, returning to action after five years out. Additionally there were two in and two out; Hull Vikings had moved up to the British League swapping places with Coatbridge Tigers and also swapping their top riders. Rayleigh Rockets closed down but the promotion, riders and nickname moved to Rye House. It was the first season of speedway at Rye House since the 1959 Southern Area League. The 1973 British League Division Two season was the second tier of motorcycle speedway in Great Britain. Summary The 1973 season saw the league expanded to 18 teams with the addition of Chesterton Potters. The team had last raced during the 1963 Provincial Speedway League season under the name of the Stoke Potters. Boston Barracudas won their first title and went on to win the league and cup double. Boston had finished runner-up to Crewe Kings the previous season, with decent season averages recorded by five riders Arthur Price, Jim Ryman, Carl Glover, Russ Osborne and Ray Bales. With a largely unchanged team, they went one place better by sealing the league title. Paul David Tyrer (born 5 December 1952) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider from England. He earned one international cap for the England national speedway team. Biography Tyrer, born in Manchester, began his British leagues career riding for Rochdale Hornets during the 1970 British League Division Two season. The following season in 1971, he improved his league average to 8.71 in just his second season of racing. He began to appear for Belle Vue Aces in the top league in 1972 and contributed towards their league and cup double winning season, although he spent most of the season with Ellesmere Port Gunners, where he topped the averages for his team. He spent the next four years at Belle Vue, winning the 1973 and 1975 Knockout Cups before signing for King's Lynn Stars in 1977 and winning a fourth Knockout Cup title. Christopher Turner (born 28 May 1958) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from England. Dave Morton
David James Morton (born 24 September 1953 in Eccles, Lancashire, England) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider who started his career with the Crewe Kings. He represented England at test level. His brother Chris Morton was also a speedway rider. He was signed by Hackney Hawks in 1973 from Crewe Kings but missed almost the entire 1977 season with a broken leg. He requested a transfer in 1978 and was swapped for Finn Thomsen from Wolverhampton Wolves. He won the New Zealand Championship in 1975. Eric James Monaghan (born 31 October 1957) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from England. Career Monaghan made his British leagues debut during the 1979 National League season, where he rode for Ellesmere Port Gunners. In 1979, he helped the Ellesmere Port win the Fours Championship during the 1979 season. He continued to ride for Ellesmere Port until they disbanded at the end of 1982. He then joined Sheffield Tigers for the 1983 British League season and then Halifax Dukes for the 1984 British League season. He switched back to the National League in 1986, when he joined Mildenhall Fen Tigers and was part of the team that won the National League Four-Team Championship in 1987.
