Morrow County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,186. The county seat is Heppner. The county is named for one of its first settlers, Jackson L. Morrow, who was a member of the state legislature when the county was created. Half of the Umatilla Chemical Depot, which includes the Umatilla Chemical Agent Disposal Facility, and the Naval Weapons Systems Training Facility Boardman are located within the county. Oregon Trail
The Oregon Trail was a east–west, large-wheeled wagon route and Westward Expansion Trails, emigrant trail in the United States that connected the Missouri River to valleys in Oregon. The eastern part of the Oregon Trail spanned part of what is now the state of Kansas and nearly all of what are now the states of Nebraska and Wyoming. The western half of the trail spanned most of the current states of Idaho and Oregon. The Oregon Trail was laid by fur traders and trappers from about 1811 to 1840 and was only passable on foot or on horseback. Cecil, Oregon
Cecil is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Morrow County, Oregon, Morrow County, Oregon, United States. It is about northwest of Ione, Oregon, Ione, on Oregon Route 74. The Oregon Trail crossed Willow Creek (Columbia River), Willow Creek here, and it was once an important stagecoach stop. Cecil was the name of a railroad station on the Heppner, Oregon, Heppner Branch of the Union Pacific railroad. In 1867, a post office named "Cecils" was established a mile south of the station; it ran until 1870. Cecil post office was established in 1902 and closed in 1974. The Cecil family, including William Cecil, a pioneer of 1862, owned large amounts of land in the area and donated the site for the post office. In 1940, Cecil had a population of 15. Boardman, Oregon
Boardman is a city in Morrow County, Oregon, United States on the Columbia River and Interstate 84. As of the 2010 census the population was 3,220. It is currently the largest town in Morrow County, Oregon. History Boardman was homesteaded in 1903 by Samuel H. Boardman, the first superintendent of the Oregon State Parks System. Boardman and his wife worked for 13 years to develop irrigation for their land; during those years his wife taught school, and Boardman at times worked on railroad construction projects. The Union Pacific Railroad passed through Boardman, where it had a station. The community was platted in 1916 at about the same time Samuel Boardman went to work for the Oregon State Highway Department and became involved in the development of roadside parks. The Boardman post office opened in 1916. The city was incorporated in 1921.
