Elizabeth Reifsnyder
Martha Elizabeth Reifsnyder (17 January 1858 - 3 February 1922) was an American physician, surgeon, teacher, and missionary. Early in her career, she was the only woman physician native to Perry County, Pennsylvania. She served as medical missionary in China, and opened the first woman's hospital in Shanghai, the Margaret Williamson Hospital. The Elizabeth Reifsnyder Hospital was a maternity building, the first one in China. Reifsnyder is remembered for performing "the first ovarian cyst operation by an American woman physician on a Chinese woman". She became internationally known after removing a 33-pound ovarian cyst from one of her Chinese patients. Early years Reifsnyder was born in Liverpool, Pennsylvania in 1858, the daughter of John and Nancy Musselman Reifsnyder. There were six siblings. Perry County, Pennsylvania
Perry County is a county in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As of the 2020 census, the population was 45,842. The county seat is New Bloomfield. The county was created on March 22, 1820, and was named for Oliver Hazard Perry, a hero of the War of 1812, who had recently died. It was originally part of Cumberland County and was created in part because residents did not want to travel over the mountain to Carlisle, the county seat of Cumberland County. Landisburg became the temporary county seat before New Bloomfield was ultimately chosen. Perry County is included in the Harrisburg-Carlisle, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county is served by the 717/223 area codes. In 2010, the center of population of Pennsylvania was located in the eastern end of Perry County. Woman's Union Missionary Society of America for Heathen Lands (also known as, Woman's Union Missionary Society of New York) was an American Christian mission organization. Established in 1861, its headquarters were at 41 Bible House, Astor Place, New York City. The first meeting called to consider organizing a society was gathered in a private parlor in New York City on January 9, 1861, and addressed by a returned missionary from Burma.
