Eliza Park International Stakes
The Tesio Stakes, is a registered Moonee Valley Racing Club Thoroughbred horse race which is run as the Powerflo Solutions Stakes (2021). It is a Group 3 event for mares aged four years old and upwards under handicap conditions, over a distance of 1600 metres held annually at Moonee Valley Racecourse , Melbourne, Australia in late October on W. S. Cox Plate Day. Prize money is A$200,000. History The race's registered name is in honour of the famous Italian horse breeder Federico Tesio (1869–1954). The sponsors of the race are usually associated with breeding and the selling of thoroughbreds since the race is for mares. Race names such as Inglis and Dalgety indicate such a trend. Moonee Valley Racecourse
Moonee Valley Racecourse, currently marketed as The Valley, is a horse-racing track in Moonee Ponds, Melbourne, Victoria Australia. History Moonee Valley Racecourse was established in 1883 by William Samuel (W.S.) Cox, who purchased a farm the previous year belonging to John F. Feehan for the purpose of establishing a racetrack. Being entirely freehold land owned by a private club, this separates Moonee Valley from other Melbourne racecourses such as Caulfield and Flemington. Expansion of the racecourse facilities occurred in the 1960s, funded by compensation for land acquired for the construction of the adjacent Tullamarine Freeway. The Thoroughbred is a horse breed best known for its use in horse racing. Although the word ''thoroughbred'' is sometimes used to refer to any breed of purebred horse, it technically refers only to the Thoroughbred breed. Group races, also known as Pattern races, or Graded races in some jurisdictions, are the highest level of races in Thoroughbred horse racing. Federico Tesio
Federico Tesio (17 January 1869 – 1 May 1954) was an Italian breeder of Thoroughbreds for horse racing. He has been called "the only genius ever to operate in the breeding world" and "the greatest single figure in the history of Italian racing". Born in Turin, orphaned at 6 years of age, Federico Tesio obtained a degree from the University of Florence. He served in the Italian Army during World War I and in 1939 was appointed to the Italian Senate. In 1898, he and his wife Lydia Tesio purchased a silk worm farm complete with thousands of Mulberry trees. These were removed and a guest residence, stallion stalls and stallion master's house were established on the Dormello Stud's 19 hectares of today in Dormelletto, Novara on the banks of Lake Maggiore in northern Italy. Black Caviar
Black Caviar (foaled 18 August 2006) is a champion Australian Thoroughbred racehorse who was undefeated in 25 races, including 15 Group Ones, an Australian record. She was the 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 WTRR World Champion Sprinter. Black Caviar was trained by Melbourne-based trainer Peter Moody. Other than in her first two runs and in one race in 2010, she was ridden by Luke Nolen. The mare was retired on 17 April 2013. According to an ABC Catalyst episode from 2015, she was never whipped. Suavito (foaled 21/08/2010) is a retired Thoroughbred racehorse formally trained by Nigel Blackiston at Flemington Racecourse. She was bred in New Zealand by IDL Racing Ltd, and was raced throughout her entire career in Australia. She was a multiple group winner and won over $1,000,000 in prize money. Career Suavito kicked off her career in a 3 year old maiden race at Ballarat over 1100m where she finished second to Solicit, a horse that went on to be a multiple group winning horse. Early in her career it was clear how talented she was, winning her second start, and going on to dominantly win her first city race at Caulfield Racecourse at just her 4th career start.
