''Elisabeth and the Fool'' (German: ''Elisabeth und der Narr'') is a 1934 German drama film directed by Thea von Harbou and starring Hertha Thiele, Theodor Loos and Rudolf Klein-Rogge. Dixon & Foster p.154 The film was the directing debut of Harbou, who was known for her screenplays for directors such as Fritz Lang and F. W. Murnau. Filming began on 12 October 1933 in Meersburg and the Lake Constance area. The film's sets were designed by the art directors Kurt Dürnhöfer and Walter Reimann. The film premiered on 24 January 1934. Thea Gabriele von Harbou (27 December 1888 Р1 July 1954) was a German screenwriter, novelist, film director, and actress. She is remembered as the screenwriter of the science fiction film classic ''Metropolis'' (1927) and for the 1925 novel on which it was based. Harbou collaborated as a screenwriter with film director Fritz Lang, her husband, during the period of transition from silent to sound films. Early life, family, and education Thea von Harbou was born in Tauperlitz (now part of D̦hlau), Bavaria, in 1888, into a family of minor nobility and government officials, which gave her a level of sophisticated comfort. Oskar Höcker (13 June 1840 – 8 April 1894) was a German author of historical novels for children and a stage actor. Biography Oskar Höcker was born in a suburb of Eilenburg, in the Prussian Province of Saxony, as was his brother, author Gustav Höcker. He was educated in Chemnitz. At the age of 19 he became an apprentice actor with F.W. Porth, a well-established actor for the royal court in Dresden, Kingdom of Saxony. He performed in Bremen, Rostock, Reichenberg, Stettin, Meiningen, and from 1866 to 1882 at the court in Karlsruhe. In 1883 his career shifted to Berlin, where he played on all the big stages and was a member of the Deutsches Theater. Oscar Blumenthal referred to him as one of the company's most players, and critic Otto Brahm praised his "discrete art," comparing him to Josef Kainz. He later joined the Lessing Theater. Erna Morena (born Ernestine Maria Fuchs, 24 April 1885 – 20 July 1962) was a German film actress, film producer, and screenwriter of the silent era. She appeared in 104 films between 1913 and 1951. Biography Ernestine Maria Fuchs was born into the middle-class family of Eugenie Fuchs (née. Seyler, 1862–1951) and Friedrich Fuchs (1859–1895) on 24 April 1885. She had a younger brother, Friedrich Fuchs (1890–1948), who became a Brentano researcher. Fuchs went to Munich at age 17 to attend the school of applied arts. She later spent half a year in Paris before moving to Berlin in 1909, where she worked as a nurse. She took lessons at the drama school of the German Theater in Berlin, and was hired by Max Reinhardt in 1910 as an actress. The following year she worked there in small roles, and began using the stage name Erna Morena.
