Elijah Benton (born September 5, 1996) is an American football safety who is a free agent. He played college football at Liberty. College career Benton played college football at Liberty University. Professional career Cleveland Browns Benton signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent on May 5, 2020. He was waived by the Browns on September 5, 2020, and signed to their practice squad the next day. Benton was elevated to the active roster on October 17 for the team's week 6 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and reverted to the practice squad after the game. He was placed on the practice squad/ COVID-19 list by the team on December 22, 2020, and restored to the practice squad on January 6, 2021. Safety is a position in gridiron football on the American football positions#Defense, defense. The safeties are defensive backs who line up ten to fifteen yards from the line of scrimmage. There are two variations of the position: the free safety and the strong safety. Their duties depend on the defensive scheme. The defensive responsibilities of the safety and cornerback usually involve pass coverage towards the middle and sidelines of the field.
