''Elemental'' is the fourth studio album by English pop rock band Tears for Fears, released on 7 June 1993 by Mercury Records. It includes the hit single " Break It Down Again". The album peaked at No. 5 in the UK and No. 45 in the US; it also reached the top 10 in France and Italy, the top 20 in Canada and the top 30 in several European countries. It has been certified Silver in the UK, and Gold in the US, Canada and France. It is the band's first album to be recorded following the departure of Curt Smith, and being the first album to be recorded solely by Roland Orzabal as official member, with the help of additional musicians. Tears for Fears are an English pop rock band formed in Bath, England, in 1981 by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. Founded after the dissolution of their first band, the mod-influenced Graduate, Tears for Fears were associated with the new wave synthesizer bands of the early 1980s, and attained international chart success. The band's debut album, '' The Hurting'' (1983), reached number one on the UK Albums Chart, and their first three hit singles – "Mad World", "Change", and "Pale Shelter" – all reached the top five in the UK Singles Chart. ''Ten'' is the debut studio album by American rock band Pearl Jam, released on August 27, 1991, through Epic Records. Following the dissolution of their previous band Mother Love Bone in 1990, bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard began rehearsing with new guitarist Mike McCready. The group recorded a five-song instrumental demo tape with Matt Cameron on drums. Copies of the demo were eventually given to drummer Dave Krusen and vocalist Eddie Vedder, both of whom were invited to audition for the band in Seattle. Many of the songs on ''Ten'' were instrumental jams or reworked Mother Love Bone songs for which Vedder composed new melodies and lyrics. Pearl Jam is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1990. ''Tin Machine'' is the debut studio album by Anglo-American hard rock band Tin Machine, released on 22May 1989 through EMI America Records. The band consisted of English singer-songwriter David Bowie, American guitarist Reeves Gabrels and brothers Tony Fox and Hunt Sales on bass and drums, respectively, while Englishman Kevin Armstrong acted as an additional guitarist. The project was spearheaded by Bowie, who felt disconnected in his career by 1987 and looked to reinvent himself. Tin Machine were a British–American rock band formed in 1988, and fronted by English singer-songwriter David Bowie. The band consisted of Bowie on lead vocals, saxophone and guitar; Reeves Gabrels on guitar and vocals; Tony Fox Sales on bass and vocals; and Hunt Sales on drums and vocals. The Sales brothers had previously performed with Bowie and Iggy Pop during the 1977 tour for ''The Idiot''. Nicky Holland
Nicky Holland (born 20 February 1959) is an English musician and singer-songwriter, notable for being a previous backing pianist/keyboardist, vocalist and co-songwriter for the band Tears for Fears during the 1980s. Early life Nicky Holland began studying piano at a young age; while attending the Royal Academy of Music, she grew inspired by the makings of Carole King. Career After graduating, Holland proceeded with her studies at the City University in London, England. There, she met classmates Virginia Astley and Kate St John, who she soon formed the band The Ravishing Beauties with in 1981. The Escape (band)
The Escape were an English new wave band from Bristol, formed in 1981 by Alan Griffiths (vocals/guitar) and Emil (drums) from Apartment with bassist Stuart Morgan. They released one single, "NoGo" / "I'll Pretend to Kill You" in 1982 on their own Volatile Records label. In early 1983, they were signed by Phonogram Records and released two further singles. In late 1983, the band toured as the support act for Tears for Fears; this expanded touring line up included guest keyboardist/backing vocalist Nicky Holland along with Pat Tedd on guitar and Peter Evans on drums. However, success eluded them and the band split up in late 1984. New Wave Music
New wave is a loosely defined music genre that encompasses pop-oriented styles from the late 1970s and the 1980s. It was originally used as a catch-all for the various styles of music that emerged after punk rock, including punk itself. ''Soul on Board'' is the debut solo studio album by English singer Curt Smith, released on 6 September 1993 by Vertigo and Phonogram Records. The album was Smith's first musical venture after leaving pop rock band Tears for Fears in 1991. Preceded by the single "Calling Out", both the album and the single were ultimately unsuccessful and failed to chart in the UK. A second single, "Words", also failed to chart. Subsequently, the album was never released at all in the US, although advance promotional cassettes were distributed in the US in very limited quantities, indicating that a US release of the album was originally planned. Smith himself later stated that he despises the album and alleges that he made it purely to fulfil his recording contract with Phonogram and Mercury Records.
