Electricity Company Of Ghana
Power Distribution Services Ghana formerly ''Electricity Company of Ghana'' is an electricity distribution company in Ghana. The company's operation covers about thirty percent of the total land mass of the country. Formerly as a public company, its operations were under the Ministry of Energy of Ghana. Together with Northern Electricity Distribution Company, they supply all of Ghana's electricity demands as well as some other West African countries. PDS took over ECG on 1 March 2019. The company has initiated many periods of load shedding which have increased in recent times and gained traction in popular culture under the term dumsor. Northern Electricity Distribution Company
Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO) is an electricity distribution utility company in Ghana. The company is a subsidiary of the Volta River Authority, the main electricity generation company in the country. The company is the sole supplier of electricity to the three Northern Regions of Ghana: Northern Region, Upper East Region and Upper West Region, Bono, Bono East, Ahafo Regions and part of the Asante and Volta Regions. The Electricity Company of Ghana supplies the other regions. History In response to the Power Sector Reforms (PSR) in 1997, NEDCo was formed out of NED and registered by VRA as a subsidiary. In Ghana, dumsor ( 'off and on') is a persistent, irregular, and unpredictable electric power outage. The frequent Ghanaian blackouts are caused by power supply shortage. Ghanaian generating capacity by 2015 was 400-600 megawatts, less than Ghana needed. Ghanaian electricity distributors regularly shed load with rolling blackouts. At the beginning of 2015, the dumsor schedule went from 24 hours with light and 12 without to 12 hours with light and 24 without. The long blackouts contrast with the practice in other countries, where blackouts roll rapidly so that no residential area is without power for more than one hour at a time. The re-introduction of dumsor in 2019 without publishing the requisite load shedding schedule came along with the term dumsaa meaning '' off'' for a considerably long time or '' off'' all the time.
