Electoral District Of West Swan
West Swan is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. It is located in the north-eastern suburbs of Perth. West Swan was considered a safe Labor seat at its creation, but after a redistribution prior to the 2017 state election became notionally Liberal. After its creation prior to the 2008 election, ABC electoral commentator Antony Green calculated a theoretical margin of 10.6% favouring Labor Party over the Liberal Party in two party preferred terms. Rita Saffioti won the seat in 2008, holding it again with a margin of 1.9 points after the 2013 election. A redistribution in 2015 saw the seat with a notional 0.9 point Liberal margin, however Saffioti retained the seat at the 2017 election which saw a large swing to Labor. Rita Saffioti
Rita Saffioti (born 26 May 1972) is an Australian politician. Representing the Australian Labor Party, she has been the member for the electoral district of West Swan in the Western Australian Legislative Assembly, the lower house of the Parliament of Western Australia, since 6 September 2008. Since 17 March 2017, she has been the minister for transport and minister for planning. Since 19 March 2021, she has also been the minister for ports. From 17 March 2017 to 13 December 2018, she was the minister for lands. Early life and career Saffioti was born on 26 May 1972 in Perth, Western Australia, to Nicodemo Saffioti, an orchardist, and Guiseppina Ienco, a cook's assistant. Saffioti's parents were post-war immigrants from the Italian region of Calabria. Landsdale is a northern suburb of Perth, Western Australia located within the local government area of the City of Wanneroo. It is mixed use, with residential, commercial and light manufacturing areas. History In the late 1990s, Landsdale began to develop from market gardens and small rural lots into residential development. It has been held by the government of the day on every occasion since its creation in 1989. In Australia, one vote, one value is a democratic principle, applied in electoral laws governing redistributions of electoral divisions of the House of Representatives. The principle calls for all electoral divisions to have the same number of enrolled voters (not residents or population), within a specified percentage of variance. The electoral laws of the Commonwealth for the House of Representatives and all states follow the principle with some exceptions. The principle does not apply to the Senate, as each state is entitled under the constitution to the same number of senators irrespective of the population of the state. 2008 Western Australian State Election
The 2008 Western Australian state election was held on Saturday 6 September 2008 to elect 59 members to the Legislative Assembly and 36 members to the Legislative Council. The incumbent centre-left Labor Party government, in power since the 2001 election and led since 25 January 2006 by Premier Alan Carpenter, was defeated by the centre-right Liberal Party opposition, led by Opposition Leader Colin Barnett since 6 August 2008. The election resulted in a hung parliament with no party gaining a majority. Labor was two seats short of a majority in the expanded legislature. Ultimately, the Liberals were able to form a coalition government with the WA Nationals, supported by three independents. Caversham is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located in the City of Swan. It contains many wineries as part of the Swan Valley wine region. Henley Brook, Western Australia
Henley Brook is an outer rural suburb of Perth, Western Australia, part of the Swan Valley wine region. The Ellen brook and Swan River meet in the northeastern corner of the suburb. Beechboro is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Swan. History The name Beechboro reflects the history of the first European owner of land in the area.
