Electoral District Of West Moreton (Queensland)
West Moreton was the name of two incarnations of an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. History The original district, named for the region it covered, took in all of the Brisbane River catchment area as well as Ipswich and Laidley, bordering New South Wales to the south. It elected three members from 1860 to 1873 and one member from 1873 until its abolition in 1878. The district was re-created in 1932 to take in an area west of Brisbane. It was abolished in 1949. Queensland Parliament
The Parliament of Queensland is the legislature of Queensland, Australia. As provided under the Constitution of Queensland, the Parliament consists of the Monarch of Australia and the Legislative Assembly. It has been the only unicameral state legislature in the country since the upper chamber, the Legislative Council, was abolished in 1922. The Legislative Assembly sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Brisbane. The National Party of Australia – Queensland (NPA-Q), commonly known as Queensland Nationals, or the National Party of Queensland, was the Queensland-state branch of the National Party of Australia (NPA) until 2008. Prior to 1974, it was known as the Country Party. Formed in 1915 by the Queensland Farmers' Union (QFU) and serving as the state branch of the National Party of Australia, it initially sought to represent the interests of the farmers but over time became a more general conservative political party in the state, leading to much debate about relations with other conservative parties and a string of mergers that were soon undone. Country And Progressive National Party
The Country and Progressive National Party was a short-lived conservative political party in the Australian state of Queensland. Formed in 1925, it combined the state's conservative forces in a single party and held office between 1929 and 1932 under the leadership of Arthur Edward Moore. Following repeated election defeat it split into separate rural and urban wings in 1936. Ted Maher (politician)
Edmund Bede "Ted" Maher (8 June 1891 – 31 December 1982) was an Australian politician, Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament of Queensland 1936 to 1941 and Federal senator 1950 to 1965. Born in Forbes, New South Wales, he was educated at Catholic schools before becoming a post office worker and stock agent. In 1921, he moved to Queensland, becoming a grazier, as well as a businessman and company director. In 1929 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Queensland as the Country Party member for Rosewood, transferring to West Moreton West Moreton is a region of the Australian state of Queensland, consisting of the entire rural western portion of South East Queensland. James Foote
James Foote (1829 - 1895) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly and a mayor of the Borough of Ipswich. Early life James Foote was born on 2 March 1829 in either Frampton Cotterell, Gloucestershire, England or in Calne, Wiltshire, England, the son of Joseph Foote (a hat maker) and his wife Elizabeth (née Clarke). In January 1848, his father Joseph emigrated to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) as an agent of the Van Dieman's Land Colonial Mission Society and was appointed the resident Independent minister at Richmond within a few weeks of his arrival. Unfortunately, on 10 September 1848 Joseph died after being seized with an apoplectic fit while preaching the divine service. He immigrated with his mother, three sisters, his brother John Clarke Foote and his sister-in-law on the ''Emigrant'' arriving in Moreton Bay on 12 August 1850. John Ferrett
John Ferrett (1812–1894) was a pastoralist and politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life John Ferrett was born in 1812 in Dorset, England, the son of Harry Ferrett and his wife Mary (née Rabbit). He immigrated to Sydney, New South Wales, Australia in 1835 on the ''Fairlie''. He worked as a station hand with the Dangar family at Gostwyck Plains, before establishing Wallann Station with them at Ipswich, Queensland around 1844. He established Wooinble Bank in Maranoa in 1862. Politics John Ferrett entered the Queensland Legislative Assembly on 4 May 1860 at the 1860 colonial election as the member for the electoral district of Maranoa. Frederick Forbes
Frederick Augustus Forbes (30 September 1818 – 9 July 1878) was a politician in colonial Queensland and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland. Early life Forbes was born on 30 September 1818 in Liverpool, Sydney, New South Wales, to Francis Ewen, a merchant, and his wife Mary Ann Taboweur. He attended William Cape's school and The King's School, Parramatta, before spending several years at sea. When his father died he took over his father's store in Liverpool in 1842 before marrying Margaret Milner in 1844. Politics Forbes soon moved to Ipswich where he opened another store and became involved in the Queensland Separation movement. Samuel Hodgson
Samuel Hodgson (1838 – 29 November 1886) was both a member of the Queensland Legislative Council and the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Hodgson was born in England in 1838. He arrived in Queensland in 1863 and within a year, he was a partner in a firm trading as ''Clarke, Hodgson & Co''. He entered politics in 1868, winning the seat of West Moreton, holding it till 1870. A year later, Hodgson was appointed to the Queensland Legislative Council but resigned just six months later. Patrick O'Sullivan (14 March 1818 – 29 February 1904) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography O'Sullivan was born in Castlemaine, County Kerry, the son of William O'Sullivan, a soldier, and his wife Ellen (née Moriarty). O'Sullivan was also a soldier, and was stationed in London with his regiment when Queen Victoria succeeded to the throne in 1837. In January the next year, however, he was sentenced to fifteen years transportation for assault, thus missing the coronation by several months. Sir Robert George Wyndham Herbert, (12 June 1831 – 6 May 1905), was the first Premier of Queensland, Australia. At 28 years and 181 days of age, he was the youngest person ever to be elected premier of an Australian state. Early years Born in Brighton, England, on 12 June 1831, Herbert was the only son of the Hon. Algernon Herbert, a younger son of the first Earl of Carnarvon.
