Electoral District Of Toohey
Toohey is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. It was created in the 2017 redistribution. It was named after Toohey Forest Park. It largely covers the area of the abolished district of Sunnybank. Located in southern Brisbane, Toohey consists of the suburbs of Moorooka, Rocklea, Salisbury, Nathan, Coopers Plains, Robertson, MacGregor, Sunnybank, Runcorn and Eight Mile Plains. From results of the 2015 election, Toohey was estimated to be a fairly safe seat for the Labor Party with a margin of 8.3%. Peter Russo (politician)
Peter Samuel Russo (born 13 September 1955) is an Australian politician. He is the Labor Party member for Toohey (formerly Sunnybank) in the Queensland Legislative Assembly since 2015. Russo is currently the Chair of the Legal Affairs and Community Safety Committee. He has previously served as the Acting Chair of the Parliamentary Crime and Corruption Committee and Chair of the Finance and Administration Committee. Prior to being elected, Russo was the Principal of Russo Lawyers and is admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Courts of Queensland, New South Wales, and Western Australia and the High Court of Australia. He holds a Master of Laws from the Queensland University of Technology. He has been admitted for over 30 years, with particular focus in the area of criminal law. Moorooka is a southern suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Moorooka had a population of 10,368 people. Geography Moorooka is by road south of Brisbane's central business district. Ipswich Road enters the suburb from the north ( Annerley) and exits to the south-west (Rocklea). Beaudesert Road splits from Ipswich Road within the suburb and exits to the south (Rocklea). The Gold Coast railway line passes along part of the western boundary of the suburb, which is serviced by the Moorooka railway station (). 2015 Queensland State Election
The 2015 Queensland state election was held on 31 January 2015 to elect all 89 members of the unicameral Legislative Assembly of Queensland. The centre-right Liberal National Party (LNP), led by Premier Campbell Newman, attempted to win a second term but was defeated by the opposition centre-left Australian Labor Party (ALP), led by Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk. Labor formed a minority government with the support of the lone independent MP in the chamber, Peter Wellington. It is only the seventh change of government in Queensland since 1915, and only the third time since 1932 that a sitting government in the state has failed to win a second term. Eight Mile Plains is an outer southern suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Eight Mile Plains had a population of 15,322 people. Geography Eight Mile Plains is by road south-southeast of the Brisbane GPO. Bulimba Creek forms the northern and western boundary of the suburb. The Gateway Motorway forms the north-eastern boundary and the Pacific Motorway forms the south-eastern boundary. Dominant natural features of the area include Bulimba Creek. Runcorn is an outer southern Suburbs and localities (Australia), suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Runcorn had a population of 14,592 people. Sunnybank, Queensland
Sunnybank is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is known for its many Asian shops and restaurants. History The Jagera Indigenous people were the first to inhabit the area well over 20,000 years ago. Early settlers noticed that the Sunnybank district had good rainfall and a beautiful loamy soil, somewhat sandy in character, that produced beautiful displays of natural wild flowers. From the mid-19th century it developed into a farming area with prosperous fruit and poultry farms and gardens of every kind. The Town of Sunnybank was surveyed in 1886. The name came from a property called Sunny Brae Estate owned by the Gillespie family. In the 19th century it was part of a much larger area known as the Parish of Yeerongpilly, but a distinct town outside of the area known as Brisbane. MacGregor is a southern suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. At the , MacGregor had a population of 5,844 people. MacGregor, like its surrounding suburbs, incorporates a very diverse multicultural community. It was previously part of Sunnybank, until the suburb was named in 1967. Geography The suburb is in three main parts, divided by the six-lane Kessels Road, and separately, Mimosa Creek. Most residential buildings are single and two-storey beige brick houses with a tiled roof. There appears to be no specific naming convention for the roads. Robertson is an outer-southern suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Robertson had a population of 4,973 people. Geography Robertson is by road (M3 Freeway) south-east of the Brisbane CBD. Robertson is loosely bounded by Kessels Road to the north, Mains Road to the east, Mccullough Street to the south, and Troughton Road to the west, but excludes the Sunnybank Plaza Shopping Centre to the south-east. Coopers Plains is a southern suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Coopers Plains had a population of 5,483 people. Geography Coopers Plains is south-west of the Brisbane CBD. The suburb is home to the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Hospital. History The locality was originally called Cowper's Plains. It was probably named by Patrick Logan after Dr Henry Cowper, Assistant Surgeon-in-Charge at the Moreton Bay Penal Settlement from 1823 to 1832. Nathan is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , it had a population of 1,085. Geography Nathan is home to Toohey Forest Conservation Park, Griffith University's Nathan campus and the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre which hosted the opening ceremony of the 1982 Commonwealth Games.
