Electoral District Of South Perth
South Perth is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in Western Australia. The district is located in the suburbs immediately south of the Perth CBD. Although occasionally held by an independent, South Perth has typically been a safe Liberal seat. It had never been won by the Labor Party until Geoff Baker won it for the party at the 2021 election. Geography South Perth is made up of affluent waterside areas in Perth's inner south. The district is bounded to the north by the Swan River and to the west and south by the Canning River. A series of roads separates the electorate from neighbouring eastern districts. The seat includes the suburbs of Como, Karawara, Manning, Salter Point, Waterford, as well as parts of the suburbs of Kensington and South Perth. 1901 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 24 April 1901 to elect 50 members to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. It was the first election to take place since responsible government without the towering presence of Premier Sir John Forrest, who had left state politics two months earlier to enter the first Federal parliament representing the Division of Swan, and the first state parliamentary election to follow the enactment of women's suffrage in 1899. Liberal And Country League (Western Australia)
The Liberal Party of Australia (Western Australian Division), branded as Liberal Western Australia, is the division of the Liberal Party of Australia in Western Australia. Founded in March 1949 as the Liberal and Country League of Western Australia (LCL), it simplified its name to the Liberal Party in 1968. There was a previous Western Australian division of the Liberal Party when the Liberal Party was formed in 1945, but it ceased to exist and merged into the LCL in May 1949. John Edwin McGrath (born 17 June 1947 in Fremantle, Western Australia) is a Western Australian politician and was the Liberal member for the electorate of South Perth in the Western Australian Legislative Assembly since the 2005 election. Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 26 February 2005 to elect all 57 members to the Legislative Assembly and all 34 members to the Legislative Council. Phillip Pendal
Phillip George Pendal (4 February 1947 – 3 June 2008) was a Liberal and later Independent Western Australian politician, an opponent of abortion rights, and historian. Early life Born in Bunbury, Western Australia, Phillip Pendal was raised and schooled as a Catholic and his strong Catholic principles continued to influence him for the rest of his life, culminating in him being honoured by the Pope John Paul II with the Holy Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice (Cross for the Church and the Pontiff) on 14 April 2005. He was a student at Xavier College in East Victoria Park (now Ursula Frayne Catholic College) in his senior school years. The Division of Swan is an Australian electoral division located in Western Australia. Swan is a marginal electorate that has swung between both major political parties in the past two decades. It extends across the Swan River from central Perth, and covers most of the area between the Swan and Canning Rivers. Swan includes the suburbs of South Perth, Como, Victoria Park, Rivervale, Belmont, High Wycombe, Maida Vale, Forrestfield and Wattle Grove. Swan includes a mix of incomes and housing types, from low-price flats to affluent suburbs with Swan River views. Electoral District Of Middle Swan
Middle Swan was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1930 to 1962. The district was located in the eastern suburbs of Perth. Despite its name, it did not include its namesake suburb (its name came from being centrally located along the Swan River), but included areas such as Bayswater, Morley, Inglewood and parts of Maylands north of the river, and Belmont, Rivervale and Lathlain south of the river. First created for the 1930 state election, the seat was won by James Hegney of the Labor Party. Hegney held the seat until his defeat by Liberal Party candidate Bill Grayden at the 1947 state election. Grayden resigned the seat mid-term to contest, successfully, the division of Swan at the 1949 federal election. William Leonard Grayden (born Wilbur Ives; 5 August 1920) is an Australian former politician. He was a member of parliament across six decades, serving in the Western Australian Legislative Assembly (1947–1949, 1956–1993) and the Australian House of Representatives (1949–1954). A World War II veteran, he served as a Liberal with the exception of a brief period as an independent. George Yates (Western Australian Politician)
George Henry Yates (27 July 1908 – 3 October 1998) was an Australian businessman and politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1947 to 1956. Yates was born in Perth to Sarah Ann (née Hill) and Henry Yates. He studied at Perth Technical College, and after leaving school worked variously as a photographer's assistant, mechanic's assistant, and car salesman. Yates joined the Citizens Military Forces in the 1920s, and in 1940 enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force. He served with the 2/28th Battalion in North Africa and New Guinea, beginning the war as a quartermaster and finishing with the rank of captain.
