Electoral District Of North Perth
The Electoral district of North Perth was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Western Australia. The district was named for its location immediately to the north of the central business district of Perth. North Perth was created under the ''Constitution Acts Amendment Act 1896'', which took effect at the 1897 election. Its first election was notable in producing Western Australia's first Labor member of Parliament, Charles Oldham, who had been a president of the Trades and Labor Council and had become an employer, and hence could afford to run in the days prior to payment of members. Oldham associated with the official opposition led by George Leake, but ultimately his seat was declared vacant for non-attendance on 16 October 1900. An independent, Richard Speight, won at the subsequent general election four months later, but died just seven months into his term. North Perth, Western Australia
North Perth is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Vincent. This old, established suburb three kilometres north of the Perth central business district is a place of mainly solid brick homes built from the early 1900s, many of which are now undergoing extensive renovations in line with the nationwide trend toward close-to-the-city living. It is home to various small shops and cafes, as well as the Rosemount Hotel. Beatty Park Leisure Centre was built (as Beatty Park Aquatic Centre) for the Perth Commonwealth Games in 1962 in Vincent Street. The Electoral district of Perth is a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Western Australia. Perth is named for the capital city of Western Australia whose central business district falls within its borders. It is one of the oldest electorates in Western Australia, with its first member having been elected in the inaugural 1890 elections of the Legislative Assembly. Perth has traditionally been a safe Labor seat Party, but was briefly held by Liberal Eleni Evangel between 2013 and 2017. Perth is currently held by Labor MLA John Carey. The Liberal Party of Australia (Western Australian Division), branded as Liberal Western Australia, is the division of the Liberal Party of Australia in Western Australia. Founded in March 1949 as the Liberal and Country League of Western Australia (LCL), it simplified its name to the Liberal Party in 1968. There was a previous Western Australian division of the Liberal Party when the Liberal Party was formed in 1945, but it ceased to exist and merged into the LCL in May 1949. The Liberal Party has held power in Western Australia for five separate periods in coalition with the National Party (previously the Country party), with the longest period between 1959 and 1971. Herbert Swan (Australian Politician)
Herbert Graham Swan (23 August 1869 – 14 June 1949) was an Australian trade unionist and politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1908 to 1914, representing the seat of North Perth. Swan was born in Dapto, New South Wales (near Wollongong), to Elizabeth (née Graham) and William Henry Swan. He came to Western Australia in 1896 and found work as an engineer for Western Australian Government Railways, having previously worked in a similar position in New South Wales. James Brebber
James Brebber (14 October 1849 – 30 January 1936) was an Australian politician who served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1905 to 1908, representing the seat of North Perth. Brebber was born in Strathdon, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, to Katherine (née Grant) and George Forbes Brebber. He lived in Glasgow and London for periods, working as a builder, before emigrating to Western Australia in 1887. Brebber moved to Victoria the following year, but eventually returned to Western Australia in 1893, where he became a real estate agent in Perth. Francis Ford Wilson (29 October 1865 – 17 June 1919) was an Australian trade unionist and politician who served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1905 to 1908, representing the seat of North Perth. Wilson was born near Creswick, Victoria. He worked variously as a blacksmith, wheelwright, and coachbuilder, living for periods in Melbourne and in Morwell. George McWilliams
George Frederick McWilliams (10 November 1865 – 12 February 1907) was an Australian medical doctor, military surgeon, and politician. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1901 to 1904, representing the seat of North Perth. Early life McWilliams was born near Geelong, Victoria, to Anne (née Toohey) and Wilson McWilliams. He was sent to school in England, but returned to Australia to study at the University of Melbourne, graduating with a medical degree ( M.B.) in 1888. McWilliams left for Western Australia later that year, initially practising medicine in York. He later spent time in the North-West, working for periods as a pearler and a stockman, before moving to Perth to establish his own practice. With Mathieson Jacoby, McWilliams helped to found the state branch of the St John Ambulance, and served as the inaugural president. 1962 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 31 March 1962 to elect all 50 members to the Legislative Assembly. The Liberal-Country coalition government, led by Premier Sir David Brand, won a second term in office against the Labor Party, led by Opposition Leader Albert Hawke. The election resulted in a confirmation of the status quo, with the only apparent seat changes since the 1959 election being due to the changes of affiliation of the two Independent Liberal members. Edward Oldfield, representing Mount Lawley, had joined the Labor Party during the previous term, whilst Bill Grayden, representing South Perth, had joined the Liberal Party. Both were re-elected. 1959 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 21 March 1959 to elect all 50 members to the Legislative Assembly. The result was a hung parliament—the two-term Labor government, led by Premier Albert Hawke, was defeated with an average swing against it of about 7 per cent, but the Liberal- Country Party coalition, led by Opposition Leader David Brand, won exactly half of the seats, and needed the support of at least one of the two Independent Liberal members to obtain a majority in the Assembly. The situation remained precarious throughout the term—while Bill Grayden joined the LCL the following year, giving the Coalition a one-seat majority, the other Independent Liberal, Edward Oldfield, joined the Labor Party. Stan Lapham
Stanley Edward Lapham (born 21 April 1908 in Kalgoorlie – died 14 December 1987) was a Australian Labor Party (Western Australian Branch), Labor politician from Western Australia. He held the seat of Electoral district of North Perth, North Perth in the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 14 February 1953, losing it to Liberal Ray O'Connor in 1959. He unsuccessfully contested the Electoral district of Karrinyup, seat of Karrinyup in 1962 and 1965. He finally won in 1968 and held it until 1974. In 1953 he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Medal, Queen's Coronation Medal. In 1957 Lapham joined with Bill Grayden, Pastor Doug Nicholls and others in an expedition to the Warburton, Western Australia, Warburton Ranges in central Australia to highlight the poor health of Indigenous Australians, Australian Aborigines.
