The Electoral district of Murray Valley was an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. The Victorian Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria in Australia; the upper house being the Victorian Legislative Council. Cobram, Victoria
Cobram is a town in the Australian state of Victoria. It is on the Murray River which forms the border between Victoria and New South Wales. Cobram along with the nearby towns of Numurkah and Yarrawonga is part of Shire of Moira and is the administrative centre of the council. Its twin town of Barooga is located on the north side of the Murray River. Surrounding Cobram are a number of orchards, dairy farms and wineries. At the 2016 census, Cobram had a population of 6,014. Numurkah, Victoria
Numurkah ( ) is a town in Victoria, Australia, located on the Goulburn Valley Highway, north of Shepparton, in the Shire of Moira. At the , Numurkah had a population of 4,768. History The area was occupied by the Yorta Yorta people prior to European settlement. Squatters moved into the area from NSW in the late 1830s. After the pastoral runs were made available for farm selection, the township of Numurkah was surveyed in 1875, the Post Office opening 2 November 1878. The local railway station was opened on the Goulburn Valley railway in 1881, but has not seen any passenger services since 1993 when the train to Cobram was withdrawn. The station building remains in private ownership, and a footbridge crosses the line. Numurkah became the headquarters of the Murray Valley Soldier Settlement Area - one of the largest soldier settlements in Australia - after World War I. Rutherglen is a small town in north-eastern Victoria, Australia, near the Murray River border with New South Wales. Wangaratta ( ) is a city in the northeast of Victoria, Australia, from Melbourne along the Hume Highway. The city had an estimated urban population of 19,318 at June 2018. George Moss (politician)
George Colin Moss (20 August 1913 – 27 May 1985) was an Australian politician. He was born in Numurkah to farmer Frederick George Moss and schoolteacher Mary Jane McArthur. He attended local state schools and worked on the family farm until 1938, when he established a wheat farm of his own at Katunga. From 1940 he had a sheep and cattle farm, but during World War II he served in the military. On 13 June 1942 he married Katrine Nancy Fankhauser, with whom he had four daughters. He was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly in 1945 as the Country Party member for Murray Valley. From 1950 to 1952 he was Minister of Agriculture and Mines. In 1955 he became deputy leader of the party, succeeding to the leadership in 1964. William Robert Baxter (born 3 November 1946) is a former Australian politician and a former Victorian State President of The Nationals. He was the Nationals member of the Victorian Legislative Council representing North Eastern Province from June 1978 until November 2006 (excepting a four-month break in 1984–85). He also served one term in the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1973 to 1976. Early life Baxter was born and raised in the Nathalia area. Kenneth Stephen Jasper AM (born 5 June 1938) is a former Nationals member for Murray Valley in the Victorian Legislative Assembly. He was first elected in 1976 and announced his retirement from the Legislative Assembly effective from the 2010 Victorian Legislative Assembly election. Career He joined the family automotive business as an apprentice motor mechanic and spray painter. Ken Jasper entered Parliament in 1976, succeeding Bill Baxter who, because of a redistribution, stood for the neighbouring seat of Benambra. Jasper went on to win the subsequent 10 elections. Tim McCurdy
Timothy Logan McCurdy (born 16 January 1963) is an Australian politician. He has been a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly since 2010, representing Murray Valley until 2014 and Ovens Valley thereafter. He was the shadow minister for sport, veterans, gaming and liquor control until March 2018, stepping down in light of the decision of Victoria Police to formally charge McCurdy with fraud offences. The charges were dismissed in the Victorian County Court in April 2021 due to lack of evidence. McCurdy returned to the Shadow Cabinet after the 2022 Victorian Election as the Shadow Minister for Water and Consumer Affairs. The 2010 Victorian state election, held on Saturday, 27 November 2010, was for the 57th Parliament of Victoria. The election was to elect all 88 members of the Legislative Assembly and all 40 members of the Legislative Council. The incumbent centre-left Labor Party government, led by John Brumby, was defeated by the centre-right Liberal/ National Coalition opposition, led by Ted Baillieu.
