Elections NWT
Elections NWT (french: Élections TNO) is an independent, non-partisan public agency responsible for the administration of territorial general elections, by-elections, and plebiscites in accordance with the ''Elections and Plebiscites Act''. Elections NWT is headed by the Chief Electoral Officer, an officer of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories. Responsibility for the management of territorial elections was devolved to Elections NWT from Elections Canada in 1997. Early history The first provisions in legislation regarding the oversight of Northwest Territories elections was adopted in 1880 with an amendment to the ''Northwest Territories Act'' passed by the Parliament of Canada. Elections Nunavut is an independent agency that oversees elections and plebiscites in Nunavut, including: * all general elections and by-elections for the 22 Members of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut, according to the Nunavut Elections Act. * all municipal elections, including mayor and council, and the district education authorities for all municipalities in Nunavut. * all plebiscites conducted according to Nunavut’s Plebiscites Act. * any plebiscites that relate to the control or prohibition of liquor in Nunavut communities, according to Nunavut’s Liquor Act, and when the Minister of Finance requests. 1999 Nunavut General Election
The 1999 Nunavut general election was the first general election in the territory and was held on 15 February 1999, to elect the members of the 1st Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. Although Nunavut did not become a territory until 1 April 1999 the election was held early to enable the members to assume their duties on that date. The territory operates on a consensus government system with no political parties; the premier is subsequently chosen by and from the MLAs. Paul Okalik was chosen to be Premier of Nunavut. ''Nunatsiaq News'' ( iu, ᓄᓇᑦᓯᐊᕐᒥ ᐱᕙᓪᓕᐊᔪᑦ, italic=no) is a Canadian weekly newspaper in operation since 1973 based in Iqaluit, serving Nunavut and Nunavik, in Kativik, Quebec, Kativik, Nord-du-Québec. The paper is published every Friday by Nortext Publishing Corporation of Iqaluit and Ottawa, and bears a retail price of C$1. Co-op stores in Nunavut and Nunavik distribute it for free. Most content is produced in English and Inuktitut syllabics, Inuktitut, with some French language, French content and the occasional article in Inuinnaqtun. Although circulation figures are not listed, the newspaper claims to have the largest circulation in Nunavut. The current managing editor is Corey Larocque. Legislative Assembly Of Nunavut
The Legislative Assembly of Nunavut is the legislative assembly for the Canadian territory of Nunavut. The seat of the Assembly is the Legislative Building of Nunavut in Iqaluit. Prior to the creation of Nunavut as a Canadian territory on April 1, 1999, the 1999 Nunavut general election was held on February 15 to determine the 1st Nunavut Legislature. The Legislative Assembly was opened by Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, on October 7, 2002, during her Golden Jubilee tour of Canada. In her speech the Queen stated: "I am proud to be the first member of the Canadian Royal Family to be greeted in Canada's newest territory." Prior to the opening of the Legislative Building in October 1999 the members met in the gymnasium of the Inuksuk High School. Jean-Pierre Kingsley
Jean-Pierre Kingsley (born July 12, 1943) is a Canadian civil servant and businessman who served as the president and CEO of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES). He was the chief electoral officer of Elections Canada before he stepped down in December 2006. On April 28, 2009, he announced his resignation as president of IFES. He was succeeded by Bill Sweeney. Early life and career He was born in Ottawa in 1943. He was educated at the Académie De La Salle and went on to earn a BCom and a master's degree in Hospital Administration from the University of Ottawa.
