Eleanor Tinsley
Eleanor Whilden Tinsley (October 31, 1926 – February 10, 2009) was an American city council and school board member. She was named to the Texas Women's Hall of Fame in 1988. The daughter of W. C. Whilden and Georgiabel Burleson, she was born in Dallas and grew up there. She was educated at the College of William and Mary and went on to earn a bachelor's degree at Baylor University. She married James Aubrey Tinsley in 1948 and moved to Houston in 1953; the couple had three children. Tinsley was active in school integration. In 1969, she was elected to the Houston Independent School Board; she became board president in 1972. She was defeated when she ran for reelection in 1973. She was elected to Houston city council in 1979. During her time on council, she worked on regulations to limit billboards, indoor smoking bans, bicycle helmet regulations, gay rights and establishing the 9-1-1 system. Texas Women's Hall Of Fame
The Texas Women's Hall of Fame was established in 1984 by the Governor's Commission on Women. The honorees are selected biennially from submissions from the public. The honorees must be either native Texans, or a resident of Texas at the time of the nomination. Aid To Families With Dependent Children
Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) was a federal assistance program in the United States in effect from 1935 to 1997, created by the Social Security Act (SSA) and administered by the United States Department of Health and Human Services that provided financial assistance to children whose families had low or no income. The program grew from a minor part of the social security system to a significant system of welfare administered by the states with federal funding. However, it was criticized for offering incentives for women to have children, and for providing disincentives for women to join the workforce. In July 1997, AFDC was replaced by the more restrictive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. Eleanor Tinsley Park is a section of Buffalo Bayou Park in Houston, Texas. It was designated on April 20, 1998 in honor of Eleanor Tinsley, who served as a member of the Houston City Council At-Large for 16 years. The park houses the Lee and Joe Jamail Skatepark, the Shady Grove Victim Memorial, a Henry Moore sculpture entitled " Large Spindle Piece", the Houston Police Officers' Memorial, Glenwood Cemetery, the San Felipe playground, jogging trails, and a sand pit which can be used for volleyball. Baptist General Convention Of Texas
The Baptist General Convention of Texas (BGCT) is the oldest surviving Baptist convention in the state of Texas. It is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Baptist World Alliance. In 2009, the BGCT began to also go by the name Texas Baptists to better communicate who they are. The convention's offices are located in Dallas, Texas, though convention staff are located across the state. The president of the BGCT is Jason Burden and the Executive Director is David Hardage. History There were Baptists among the first Anglo-American settlers of Texas, but under Spain (and later Mexico), non-Catholic religious worship was prohibited.
