Widow City
A widow (female) or widower (male) is a person whose spouse has died. Terminology The state of having lost one's spouse to death is termed ''widowhood''. An archaic term for a widow is "relict," literally "someone left over". This word can sometimes be found on older gravestones. The word "widow" comes from an Indo-European root meaning "widow" and has cognates across Indo-European languages. The male form, "widower", is first attested in the 14th century, by the 19th century supplanting "widow" with reference to men. The term ''widowhood'' can be used for either sex, at least according to some dictionaries, but the word ''widowerhood'' is also listed in some dictionaries. Occasionally, the word ''viduity'' is used. The adjective for either sex is ''widowed''. These terms are not applied to a divorcé(e) following the death of an ex-spouse. Effects on health The phenomenon that refers to the increased mortality rate after the death of a spouse is called the ''widowhood e ...

Bitter Tea
''Bitter Tea'' is the fifth full-length album by The Fiery Furnaces, released on April 18, 2006, via Fat Possum in the U.S and Rough Trade in the UK. After it leaked onto the internet on February 22, the band immediately started selling the CD on tour. The band envisioned ''Bitter Tea'' as a loose companion piece to their previous album ''Rehearsing My Choir'', which had released just five months prior. Critical response ''Bitter Tea'' received generally positive reviews that were less polarized than their previous two proper albums, ''Blueberry Boat'' and ''Rehearsing My Choir''. At ''Pitchfork Media'', Mark Richardson praised the "sweet, undeniable melody" of "Teach Me Sweetheart" and the poppy likeability of "Benton Harbor Blues." Heather Phares at AllMusic criticized the album for being too long and "oddly diluted," but admitted that "even if all the songs aren't uniformly great, there's something interesting about each of them." Track listing # "In My Little Thatched Hut" ...

Rehearsing My Choir
''Rehearsing My Choir'' is the fourth full-length album by The Fiery Furnaces and was released in 2005. It is a concept album featuring Olga Sarantos, grandmother of the band's Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger, narrating stories relating to her life. Though the instrumentation is as complex as on the band's previous releases, the vocals mostly take the form of spoken word. At points Eleanor Friedberger speaks or sings words corresponding to the character of a younger Olga Sarantos, the two engaging in dialogue. This aspect has made many draw relations between the album and a radio play. Olga Sarantos died on December 31, 2007 Track listing # "The Garfield El" – 4:23 # "The Wayward Granddaughter" – 6:23 # "A Candymaker's Knife in My Handbag" – 4:48 # "We Wrote Letters Everyday" – 4:17 # "Forty-Eight Twenty-Three Twenty-Second Street" – 4:55 # "Guns Under the Counter" – 4:31 # "Seven Silver Curses" – 9:20 # "Though Let's Be Fair" – 2:05 # "Slavin' Away" – 6:54 # "Re ...

Blueberry Boat
''Blueberry Boat'' is the second album by American indie rock band The Fiery Furnaces. It was released on July 13, 2004, just over ten months following their debut album, '' Gallowsbird's Bark''. ''Blueberry Boat'' polarized music critics due to its long, complex songs and esoteric lyrics. Music and lyrics More than twenty different instruments were used in the creation of this album, including the sitar, which was substituted for guitar on some songs. Keyboards, guitars, and drums are the main instruments used. As with all Fiery Furnaces releases, Eleanor Friedberger provides most of the vocals, with her brother Matt adding to a few songs. Matt is considered the main instrumentalist for the band, while both Friedbergers share lyrical duties. The album is more structurally complex than the band's debut, '' Gallowsbird's Bark'', and most of the songs have distinct movements that sound like multiple songs combined. The song "Straight Street" references the biblical "street c ...

Gallowsbird's Bark
''Gallowsbird's Bark'' is the debut studio album by The Fiery Furnaces released by Rough Trade Records in 2003. Additional information "Inca Rag"/"Name Game" is actually two songs that blend into each other, this being an indication of the direction the band would take on the following album ''Blueberry Boat''. "Tropical Ice-Land", "Rub-Alcohol Blues" and "We Got Back the Plague" share the same tempo, are grouped together on the album cover track listing and could for this reason be construed as a three-part song. "Rub Alcohol Blues", credited to William E. Myer is most known for being performed by (and written for) the folk banjo player Dock Boggs. "Crystal Clear", "Tropical Ice-Land" and "We Got Back the Plague" have all appeared on singles, "Tropical Ice-Land" also appearing on the 2005 compilation '' EP''. These single versions of "Tropical Ice-Land" and "We Got Back the Plague" however differ significantly from the original album versions. Reception ''Gallowsbird's Bark'' ...
