El Seibo, Dominican Republic
Santa Cruz del Seibo or El Seibo, is a city and municipality in the El Seibo Province of the Dominican Republic, located in the eastern part of the country. History El Seibo is one of the oldest towns in the country, it was created by the Constitution of November 6, 1844 although it already existed as a territorial division since colonial times, for this reason its foundation dates back to 1502 by the Spanish conqueror Juan de Esquivel. The name of Seibo comes from a tribal chief of Taino race. The name of Santa Cruz del Seibo, is taken from the Spanish custom of placing the ''Cruz de Cristo'' (Holy Cross) in the cardinal points, as protection against evils. A cross called Asomante is still preserved, in the West Sector of the city of El Seibo. Antonio Duvergé Duval (1807–April 11, 1855), a Dominican general of French origin and one of the most legendary military figures in the history of the Dominican Republic, served in the Dominican War of Independence. He was a hero and martyr who proclaimed the birth of the new Republic on February 28, 1844, in Bani and days later in Azua. CharytÃn Goyco (born MarÃa del Rosario Goico RodrÃguez, on May 23, 1949 in Santa LucÃa), better known in show business as simply CharytÃn, is a Dominican singer, television hostess and actress. Freddy Reinaldo Antonio Beras-Goico (November 21, 1940 – November 18, 2010), popularly known as "Freddy Beras" or just "Beras-Goico", was a Dominican comedian, TV presenter, writer and media personality for over 30 years. Minerva Bernardino (1907 – August 29, 1998) was a diplomat from the Dominican Republic who promoted women's rights internationally, and is best known as one of the four women to sign the original charter of the United Nations. Biography Bernardino was born in El Seibo in 1907 to an "unusually liberal" family. She was orphaned at age 15 and moved to Santo Domingo, where she finished secondary school as part of a new generation of ''Normalistas''—Latin American women pursuing education beyond primary school—and began a career in the Dominican Republic's civil service.
