Eidsvoll Station (1854–1998)
Eidsvoll Station ( no, Eidsvoll stasjon) was a railway station at Eidsvoll in Akershus, Norway. It was located on the Trunk Line (''Hovedbanen''). History Eidsvoll Station opened in 1854 as the terminus of Norway's first railway. It had a temporary building at first, but a proper building with hotel was opened in 1858. That station building burned down on October 16, 1877. The present building was designed by Jacob Wilhelm Nordan and constructed in 1878, similar to the previous. A 20-room hotel was established in the station building which from 1924 was under the operation of Norsk Spisevognselskap, which also took over the restaurant. Eidsvoll (; sometimes written as ''Eidsvold'') is a municipality in Akershus in Viken county, Norway. It is part of the Romerike traditional region. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Sundet. General information Etymology The first element is the genitive case of the word ''eid'' (Old Norse: ''eið'') and the last element is ''voll'' (Old Norse: ''vǫllr'') which means "meadow" or "field". The meaning of the word ''eid'' in this case is "a road passing around a waterfall". People from the districts around the lake ( Mjøsa) who were sailing down the river Vorma, and people from Romerike sailing up the same river, both had to enter this area by passing the Sundfossen waterfall. Jacob Wilhelm Nordan (23 February 1824 – 11 April 1892) was a Danish-born, Norwegian architect. During his career, he was one of the most prolific church architects in Norway. Biography Nordan was born in Copenhagen, Denmark and came to Norway as a child with his mother. Norsk Spisevognselskap A/S, often abbreviated NSS or shortened to Spisevognselskapet (Norwegian for "The Dining Car Company"), was a Norwegian state enterprise which operated restaurant carriages on Norwegian trains and restaurants at railway stations and railway hotels. Gardermoen Line
The Gardermoen Line ( no, Gardermobanen) is a high-speed railway line between Oslo and Eidsvoll, Norway, running past Lillestrøm and Oslo Airport, Gardermoen.
