Glen Carbon, Illinois
Glen Carbon is a village in Madison County, Illinois, United States, northeast of St. Louis. The population was 13,842 at the 2020 census. History In 1801, Colonel Samuel Judy received a military grant for of land near the base of the bluffs, just north of Judy Creek, and became one of the first permanent settlers of Madison County. The land was called Goshen Settlement, after the biblical land of Goshen. It was renamed Glen Carbon to reflect its coal mining heritage. Glen Carbon was incorporated as a village in 1892. It operated many coal mines until the last one shut down in 1934. Another industry was the St. Louis brick company, which burned down in the 1930s; then, right after being rebuilt, it burned down and was never rebuilt again. Incorporated in 1999, the Historic Saint Louis Street Association (HSSA) is a non-profit organization; the mission of which is to protect and preserve Historic Saint Louis Street and its community. Located in Edwardsville, Illinois, Historic Saint Louis Street was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Saint Louis Street is a mile long National Historic District, which dates back to 1809. It is a residential street with over 50 historic homes that are from the middle 18th Century to early 19th Century. The association has a governing board of seven members. Board members are elected for staggered two year terms by the members of the association. Membership in the association is voluntary. Leclaire was born the son of a poor village shoemaker, in Aisy-sur-Armançon, a small village in the district of Tonnerre, department of Yonne in France. LeClaire Historic District
LeClaire Historic District is a historic district located in Edwardsville, Illinois. The community was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 8, 1979. N. O. Nelson, the owner of the Nelson Manufacturing Company, established the town between 1890 and 1895 on donated land. Nelson planned the town to be an intentional community inspired by ideals such as Edward Bellamy's novel ''Looking Backward'' and the Ethical Culture movement. The community included an academy which offered free adult education and reading rooms, which was inspired by a self-culture hall in St. Louis. Nelson also established a profit sharing system in the community. The system was derived from a concept used at the Maison LeClaire in Paris, from which the community took its name. The Illinois State Historical Society (ISHS) is a private sector organization, organized as a nonprofit, that edits and disseminates public knowledge of history throughout the U.S. state of Illinois. Edwards Trace
The Edwards Trace was an overland trail that served the frontier region that became Central Illinois. The trail is usually described as extending from Cahokia in the south, to Peoria in the north. During the 1810s and 1820s the trace played a decisive role in the settlement of Central Illinois by Euro-Americans. History Active trail The Native Americans had, by 1492, developed a complex skein of roads, trails, and traces over most of North America.
