Edward Perry (industrialist)
Edward Perry (15 November 1800 – 2 March 1869), was an English tinplate works master and twice Mayor of Wolverhampton. Early life Edward Perry was born on 15 November 1800 in Wolverhampton, to Richard Perry and Sarah. He attended Wolverhampton Grammar School. Tin plate After leaving school he became a japanner, eventually leaving to set up his own company. The business quickly outgrew its site and moved to new premises. Perry built up a very successful tin plate works that grew faster and larger than the similar business, Richard Perry & Son, created by his father and brother. Following his death, his business was absorbed into the other family firm, eventually becoming part of John Marston's Sunbeam works. Wolverhampton
Wolverhampton () is a city, metropolitan borough and administrative centre in the West Midlands, England. The population size has increased by 5.7%, from around 249,500 in 2011 to 263,700 in 2021. People from the city are called "Wulfrunians". Historically part of Staffordshire, the city grew initially as a market town specialising in the wool trade. In the Industrial Revolution, it became a major centre for coal mining, steel production, lock making, and the manufacture of cars and motorcycles. The economy of the city is still based on engineering, including a large aerospace industry, as well as the service sector. James Shipton
James Shipton (19 August 1798 – 1 February 1865) was a timber merchant and licensed carrier who served as mayor of Wolverhampton from 1854 to 1855. Shipton and Co. Following established coal and flour milling operations alongside Brindley's newly constructed Birmingham Canal at Albion Wharf, Wolverhampton, James and Maurice Shipton opened a carrier service in 1821, followed by a timber wharf in 1827. The Shipton family were established timber merchants with a yard in Birmingham started by Joseph Shipton. Shiptons developed a new Albion Wharf depot for the Swift Packet boat service between Birmingham and Wolverhampton to replace their earlier site. Maurice Shipton dissolved the partnership and James continued to trade on his own. The area continued to develop as a junction between canal and the railways. Moses Ironmonger
Moses Ironmonger (25November 1887) was a successful rope manufacturer who, although an orphan from humble beginnings, twice became Mayor of Wolverhampton (1857–58 and 1868–69). Ironmonger & Co Ltd. Ironmonger built up a very successful business manufacturing rope, first at Cock Street then a larger site at Gt Brickkiln Street, now the Baynell Building. Ironmonger & Co Ltd. carried on for two further generations until it finally went into liquidation in 1902. Provincial telephone pioneer He was a friend of the inventor of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell, and in 1880 the first telephone line in Wolverhampton was laid between Ironmonger's factory and the company's offices, a mile away, barely four years after Bell's demonstration of clear speech on a telephone transmission. Tettenhall
Tettenhall is an historic village within the City of Wolverhampton, England. Tettenhall became part of Wolverhampton in 1966, along with Bilston, Wednesfield and parts of Willenhall, Coseley and Sedgley. History Tettenhall's name derives from the Old English ''Teottanhalh'', meaning "nook of land belonging to a man named Teotta". The original ''halh'' was likely situated in the sheltered area below the ridge where the church stands. This area, around Lower Green, was the original inhabited area of Tettenhall. In early English (Anglo-Saxon) times, as the place name evidence tells us, there were many cleared woodland areas – areas where field and settlement would have been commonplace. These can be seen today by the place name ending "ley", from early English "lēah", meaning woodland clearing; Wrottesley being one such example in the local area.
