Edward J. Volz
Edward John Volz (August 22, 1879 – fl.1964) was an American labor union leader. Born in Cincinnati, Volz joined the International Photo-Engravers Union of North America. He moved to New York City, and in 1916 was elected as president of the New York Photo-Engravers Union, and also first vice-president of the international union. In 1929, he won election as president of the union, serving until 1954. As leader of the union, he backed the American Federation of Labor and strongly criticized the Congress of Industrial Organizations split. In 1964, the Photo-Engravers merged into the new Lithographers and Photoengravers International Union. At its founding conference, Volz gave a short speech in support of the merger, reviewing previous unsuccessful attempts to bring the unions together. Dave Beck
David Daniel Beck (June 16, 1894December 26, 1993) was an American labor leader, and president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters from 1952 to 1957. He helped found the "Conference" system of organization in the Teamsters union, and shot to national prominence in 1957 by repeatedly invoking his right against self-incrimination before a United States Senate committee investigating labor racketeering. International Photo-Engravers' Union of North America (IPEU) was a labor union formed in 1904 to represent halftone photoengravers in the printing industry. Its successor union is the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Change to Win Federation. Formation of publishing unions For several centuries, wood engraving had dominated the publishing industry as the source of graphics. The invention of photography and halftone printing created a new kind of graphic worker—photoengravers. By the mid-1890s, halftone printing had largely replaced wood engraving in the publishing industry. Although wood engravers had never formed a union, photoengravers did so almost upon the creation of their industry. Matthew Woll (January 25, 1880 – June 1, 1956) was president of the International Photo-Engravers Union of North America from 1906 to 1929, an American Federation of Labor (AFL) vice president from 1919 to 1955 and an AFL-CIO vice president from 1955 to 1956.
