Edward Cleary (cricketer)
Edward Joseph "Ted" Cleary (18 April 1913 – 6 April 1985) was an Australian cricketer. He played three first-class cricket matches for Victoria in 1934. The son of politician Edward Cleary, he played locally in the Benalla & District Cricket Association as well as for South Melbourne and VCA Colts in Melbourne district cricket. Benalla
Benalla is a small city located on the Broken River gateway to the High Country north-eastern region of Victoria, Australia, about north east of the state capital Melbourne. At the the population was 10,822. It is the administrative centre for the Rural City of Benalla local government area. History Prior to the European settlement of Australia, the Benalla region was populated by the Taungurung people, an Indigenous Australian people. A 1906 history recounts that prior to white settlement "as many as 400 blacks would meet together in the vicinity of Benalla to hold a corrobboree". The area was first sighted by Europeans during an expedition of Hamilton Hume and William Hovell in 1824 and was noted as an agricultural settlement called "Swampy". Victoria Cricket Team
The Victoria men’s cricket team is an Australian first-class men's cricket team based in Melbourne, Victoria. The men’s team, which first played in 1851, represents the state of Victoria in the Marsh Sheffield Shield first-class competition and the Marsh One Day Cup 50-over competition. It was known as the Victorian Bushrangers between 1995 and 2018, before dropping the Bushrangers nickname and electing to be known as simply Victoria in all cricket competitions. Victoria shares home matches between the Melbourne Cricket Ground in East Melbourne and the Junction Oval in St Kilda. The team is administered by Cricket Victoria and draws its players primarily from Victoria's Premier Cricket competition along with players from throughout the country. Cricket
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. A significant omission of the ICC ruling was any attempt to define first-class cricket retrospectively. Edward Cleary (Australian Politician)
Edward Francis Cleary (c. 1878 – 24 August 1936) was an Australian politician. He was born in Nooramunga to farmer Michael Cleary and Mary Moroney. He attended state schools and became a farmer at Goorambat. On 16 September 1907 he married Catherine Pelly, with whom he had nine children. He served on Benalla Shire Council from 1910 to 1936, and was president from 1913 to 1914. In 1927 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Benalla, representing the Country Progressive Party. In 1930 the Country Progressives reunited within the Country Party, and in 1935 Cleary became government whip. He died in East Melbourne in 1936. South Melbourne Cricket Club
The Casey-South Melbourne Cricket Club is a cricket club located in the outer south-eastern Melbourne suburb of Cranbourne East, which plays in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition. Founded in 1862 as South Melbourne, it has produced nine Australian Test captains, more than any other cricket club in Australia. 47 international players have represented the club, eight of whom have been listed as a ''Wisden'' “ Cricketer of the Year”. The club played at the South Melbourne Cricket Ground in Albert Park until 1994, when the ground was redeveloped into a soccer stadium. VCA Colts Cricket Team
The VCA Colts cricket team competed in the Melbourne Victorian Premier Cricket, district cricket competition between 1929–30 and the start of World War II. Administered by the Cricket Victoria, Victorian Cricket Association (VCA), it was a developmental team that included mainly young players with potential who were led by one or two players with First-class cricket, first-class experience. Some of the notable cricketers who played with the team before their rise to fame included Lindsay Hassett, Ian Johnson (cricketer), Ian Johnson and Keith Miller. Victorian Premier Cricket is a club cricket competition in the state of Victoria administered by Cricket Victoria. Each club fields four teams (firsts through to fourths) of adult players and usually play on weekends and public holidays. Matches are played on turf wickets under limited-time rules, with most results being decided on a first-innings basis. Outstanding players in the competition are selected to play for the Victorian Bushrangers at first-class and List A level, in the Sheffield Shield and Marsh One Day Cup competitions respectively.
