Eduard Selling
Eduard Selling (5 November 1834 in Ansbach – 31 January 1920 in Munich) was a German mathematician and inventor of calculating machines. Selling studied mathematics at the Universities of Göttingen and Munich (under Philipp Ludwig von Seidel). He obtained the doctorate in Munich in 1859, under the supervision of Bernhard Riemann.Selling (1859): ''Über Primzahlen und die Zusammensetzung der Zahlen aus ihnen in dem rationellen und in complex-irrationellen Zahlengebieten'' On recommendation of Leopold Kronecker he became professor extraordinarius of mathematics at the University of Würzburg in 1860 – against the will of the philosophical faculty and the mathematics professor Aloys Mayr. Émile Picard
Charles Émile Picard (; 24 July 1856 – 11 December 1941) was a French mathematician. He was elected the fifteenth member to occupy seat 1 of the Académie française in 1924. Life He was born in Paris on 24 July 1856 and educated there at the Lycée Henri-IV. He then studied mathematics at the École Normale Supérieure. Picard's mathematical papers, textbooks, and many popular writings exhibit an extraordinary range of interests, as well as an impressive mastery of the mathematics of his time. Christel Bernhard Julius Hamann (born February 27, 1847 in Hammelwarden, Oldenburg – died June 9, 1948 in Berlin, Germany) was a German-born inventor of Computing Machines. Early life and education Hamann's father was an Oldenburg border guard and ambassador in Ellwitz. Hamann completed an apprenticeship as a mechanic at the Nautical Institute in Bremerhaven and visited the pilot school there. Afterwards he attended the mathematical-mechanical institute of A. Ott in Kempten (Allgäu) in the workshops of Carl Zeiss in Jena and in the workshop of Carl Bamberg in Berlin. Charles Xavier Thomas de Colmar (May 5, 1785 – March 12, 1870) was a French inventor and entrepreneur best known for designing, patenting and manufacturing the first commercially successful mechanical calculator, the Arithmometer, and for founding the insurance companies ''Le Soleil'' and ''L'aigle'' which, under his leadership, became the number one insurance group in France at the beginning of the Second Empire. In mathematical notation for numbers, a signed-digit representation is a positional numeral system with a set of signed digits used to encode the integers. Signed-digit representation can be used to accomplish fast addition of integers because it can eliminate chains of dependent carries.
