Edmar John Mednis ( lv, Edmārs Džons Mednis; March 22, 1937 – February 13, 2002) was a Latvian-American chess player and writer of Latvian origin. He was awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE in 1980. Biography Mednis' family were refugees in 1944 during World War II. As displaced persons, Edmar and his two sisters, with parents Edvin and Marita Mednis, were permitted to emigrate to the United States in 1950. Mednis was trained as a chemical engineer, then worked as a stockbroker, but became best known as a chess author. He wrote 26 chess books, including ''Practical Rook Endings'' (1982) and ''Strategic Chess: Mastering the Closed Game'' (1993), and hundreds of chess articles. He and Robert Byrne annotated many games for ''Chess Informant''. Mednis finished second in the 1955 World Junior Championship behind Boris Spassky (the two drew their game). Edmar Castañeda (born 1978) is a Colombian harpist. He performs his own compositions as well as tapping into native music of Colombia and Venezuela. He leads a trio with David Silliman on drums and Marshall Gilkes on trombone. He has also been a member of the Andrea Tierra Quartet with Andrea Tierra, Sam Sadigursky, and David Silliman. Castañeda's father was Pavelid Castañeda, a harpist, singer, and teacher. Edmar Castañeda began playing the harp at the age of 13. In the mid 1990s he moved to New York City and studied jazz trumpet before returning to the harp. In 2006 he released his first solo album, ''Cuarto de Colores''. Edmar Figueira (born 13 May 1984) is a Brazilian professional footballer who last played for SC São Paulo. He is a left-footed striker. Career Figueira made his first football steps as a youth in Brazilian clubs Paraná Soccer Technical Center (PSTC), União Bandeirantes and Paranavai Atletico Club. He became a professional footballer by playing in Sociedade Esportiva Matsubara and quickly his good potential and performances there give him his first chance in Europe, in the Swiss club Grasshopper Club Zurich in 2003 at the age of 18. He also passed a short period in Germany under negotiation with the Bundesliga Club SC Freiburg, but did not sign because of not having an EU passport. Born on 25 September 1946 (Formosa, now the district of Santa Cruz do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul), son of Edwaldo Waldemar Hermany and Romilda Hermina Hermany. He is married to Helena Hermany and father of three. He majored in Law and Social Sciences at the Law School of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria in 1975. He joined politics in 1988 when he was elected as councilor for Santa Cruz do Sul. In his first term, he chaired the City Council for two years. Edmar Gomes Rodrigues (born 27 March 1981 in João Pinheiro), commonly known as Edmar or Edmar Dida is a retired Brazilian professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper.
