Edinburgh University Hockey Club
Edinburgh University Men's Hockey Club is the official men's hockey club for The University of Edinburgh. It currently comprises eight men's teams, which makes it the largest men's university field hockey and sports club in the United Kingdom, with over 190 active members. Each team plays in regional Saturday league matches across eastern districts of Scotland and the top teams play in the national leagues and central leagues. The 1XI - 7XI teams participate in extra leagues on a Wednesday afternoon, where they participate in their respective British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) league, playing other universities in Scotland and across the UK. Students who are given offers to study at the University of Edinburgh enjoy access to the best performance hockey programme for 18-22 year olds in Scotland, as the only men's club playing in BUCS Premier National. Dennis Hay
Dennis Hay (born 5 October 1940) is a former Scottish field hockey player, who competed for Great Britain at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Later he became a coach, leading the GB Women's Team to the bronze medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, after having finished in fourth place at the 1988 Summer Olympics. The University of Exeter Men's Hockey Club is a field hockey club based in Exeter, Devon, England. The club plays its matches at the Sports Park on the University of Exeter's Streatham Campus. There is a water based pitch and a hybrid pitch. The Men's 1st XI play in the Premier Division of the Men's England Hockey League, which is the highest division in Great Britain. The club fields six men's teams which compete in BUCS leagues on Wednesdays and in local and National leagues at the weekend. A seventh XI was formed in 2014, serving as a Development XI for those working towards a berth in one of the six regular outfits, which now also participates in the local weekend league. Pollock Halls of Residence is the largest halls of residence for the University of Edinburgh, located in St Leonard's, Edinburgh, Scotland, near the foot of Arthur's Seat. The complex of buildings houses more than 2,000 undergraduate students during term time, and is available to the public as bed and breakfast-style accommodation outside of the teaching term. The Gambler (song)
"The Gambler" is a song written by Don Schlitz and recorded by several artists, most famously by American country singer Kenny Rogers. Schlitz wrote the song in August 1976 when he was 23 years old. It took two years of shopping the song around Nashville before Bobby Bare recorded it on his album ''Bare'' at the urging of Shel Silverstein. Bare's version did not catch on and was never released as a single, so Schlitz recorded it himself, but that version failed to chart higher than No. 65. Other musicians took notice and recorded the song in 1978, including Johnny Cash, who put it on his album '' Gone Girl''. It was Rogers, however, who made the song a mainstream success. His version was a No. 1 country hit, and made its way to the pop charts at a time when country songs rarely crossed over. Edinburgh University Sports Union (EUSU) is the representative body of sixty-seven University of Edinburgh sports clubs. Edinburgh University sports teams compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) and Scottish Student Sport leagues. Edinburgh was ranked 3rd in the BUCS rankings in 2017/18, 2016/17, 2015/16, 2014/15, 4th in 2018/19 and 2021/22, 5th in 2013/14, and 6th in 2012/13 and 2011/12.
