Edgemont is a city in Fall River County, South Dakota, Fall River County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 725 at the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census. The city lies on the far southern edge of the Black Hills in southwestern South Dakota. Edgemont is a crew change point for BNSF Railway, BNSF rail freight transport, freight trains in the Gillette, Wyoming-Alliance, Nebraska division. History Edgemont had its start in 1890 with the building of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, Burlington Railroad through that territory. In 2012, the White Draw Fire burned eight miles northeast of Edgemont. On July 1, 2012, an airplane fighting the fire crashed near town, killing four military personnel and injuring two. On the morning of January 17, 2017, a BNSF Railway westbound train struck and killed two roadway workers, including the watchman/lookout. Elk Mountains (South Dakota)
The Elk Mountains are a small range of mountains in western South Dakota, forming the southwest portion of the Black Hills as part of its west-dipping monocline. They are geologically distinct from the Black Hills, on the other side of a "racetrack" region of red stone. The ridge of the Elk Mountains is formed of harder sandstones. The east face of the Elk Mountains is a high escarpment, but the west portion falls slowly and features many canyons. Most of the Elk Mountains were protected in the Harney National Forest until 1954, when this protected area joined the Black Hills National Forest. Burdock is an uninhabited ghost town in Argentine Township in Fall River County, South Dakota, United States. According to the Federal Writers' Project, the origin of the name Burdock is obscure. Geography At this location is the intersection of Fall River County Highway 6463 (Dewey Road) and Township Road B (Argentine Road and Burdock Road). A BNSF Railway line parallels the county highway. In the county's square mile designation, Burdock is closest to 103rd Avenue and 273rd Street. Burdock's nearest neighbors are Dewey to the northwest and Edgemont to the southeast.
