Edgar Prowse
Edgar Wylie Prowse (22 March 1905 – 2 June 1977) was an Australian politician who served as a Senator for Western Australia from 1962 to 1973, representing the Country Party. He was a farmer before entering politics. Early life Prowse was born in Mount Kokeby, Western Australia, to Maud Helena Grace (née Quarmby) and Albert Edward Cornwall Prowse. His uncle, John Prowse, served in the House of Representatives. Prowse attended primary school in Perth and Doodlakine, and then studied at Northam High School before going on to the University of Western Australia. He returned to the family property at Doodlakine after graduating, and wrote on agricultural topics for the '' Daily News''. Prowse was prominent in the Wheat Growers' Union, serving on the state executive, and was on the Kellerberrin Road Board from 1945 to 1949. He moved to Darkan in 1949. The President of the Senate is the presiding officer of the Australian Senate, the upper house of the Parliament of Australia. The position is provided for by Section 17 of the Constitution of Australia. The Senate elects one of its members as president at the start of each new term, or whenever the position is vacant. This is usually—though not necessarily—a member of the party or coalition that holds the most seats in the Senate. The largest party in the Senate is not always the governing party, as government is determined by the House of Representatives. The Shire of Kellerberrin is a local government area in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, about west of Merredin and about east of Perth, the state capital. The Shire covers an area of and its seat of government is the town of Kellerberrin. History On 24 July 1908, the Kellerberrin Road District was created, and included large parts of what is now Tammin, Wyalkatchem and Trayning. On 1 July 1961, it became the Shire of Kellerberrin after the ''Local Government Act 1960'' was enacted, which reformed all remaining road districts into shires. Elleker, Western Australia
Elleker is a small town in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, about west of the regional city of Albany. It is situated along the Lower Denmark Road; the main tourist route from Albany to Denmark. The town was planned by the Western Australian Land Company, who built the Great Southern Railway in 1886–1889. It was originally known as Lakeside, due to its proximity to Lake Powell, but did not develop initially. The Government purchased the railway in 1896, redesigned the town and gazetted it as Lakeside in 1899. The town emerged as a railway junction between the Torbay line, which served timber sawmills in the area, and the Great Southern railway, and it was renamed Torbay Junction in 1908. In 1921, it was renamed Elleker on the recommendation of a former member of the Albany Road Board who lived in the area, after Ellerker in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Albany ( ; nys, Kinjarling) is a port city in the Great Southern region in the Australian state of Western Australia, southeast of Perth, the state capital. The city centre is at the northern edge of Princess Royal Harbour, which is a part of King George Sound. The central business district is bounded by Mount Clarence to the east and Mount Melville to the west. The city is in the local government area of the City of Albany. While it is the oldest colonial, although not European, settlement in Western Australia - predating Perth and Fremantle by over two years - it was a semi-exclave of New South Wales for over four years until it was made part of the Swan River Colony. Capital punishment in Australia was a form of punishment in Australia that has been abolished in all jurisdictions. Queensland abolished the death penalty in 1922. Tasmania did the same in 1968. The Commonwealth abolished the death penalty in 1973, with application also in the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory. Victoria did so in 1975, South Australia in 1976, and Western Australia in 1984. New South Wales abolished the death penalty for murder in 1955, and for all crimes in 1985. In 2010, the Commonwealth Parliament passed legislation prohibiting the re-establishment of capital punishment by any state or territory.
