Eddie McLeod
Edwin George McLeod (14 October 1900 – 14 September 1989) was a New Zealand cricketer who played in one Test in 1930. He was also an international hockey player who captained New Zealand. Cricket career McLeod was a middle-order and opening batsman who also bowled leg-spin. He played for Auckland from 1920–21 to 1923–24, and for Wellington from 1925–26 to 1940–41. He captained Wellington in 1939-40 and 1940–41. When the MCC toured New Zealand to play New Zealand's first Test series in 1929–30, McLeod scored 37 and 21 not out and took 3 for 7 and 4 for 56 for Wellington against the tourists. New Zealand lost the First Test shortly afterwards, and McLeod was one of three new players brought in for the Second Test. He was not successful (although New Zealand improved and drew the match) and did not play any further Tests. He made 102 and 35 for Wellington against Auckland two weeks after the Test series ended. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. Test cricket is a form of first-class cricket played at international level between teams representing full member countries of the International Cricket Council (ICC). A match consists of four innings (two per team) and is scheduled to last for up to five days. In the past, some Test matches had no time limit and were called Timeless Tests. The term "test match" was originally coined in 1861–62 but in a different context. Test cricket did not become an officially recognised format until the 1890s, but many international matches since 1877 have been retrospectively awarded Test status.
