East Side Story (1997 Film)
''East Side Story'' is a 1997 documentary directed by Dana Ranga. The film documents the Soviet Bloc musical genre, which first appeared under Stalin and spread to Soviet-occupied Eastern Europe. The film features interviews with actors, film historians, and audience members who reminisce on these unlikely films and their impact on Soviet Bloc life. Synopsis The film first looks at Grigori Alexandrov, a director who made his career in the 1930s musicals. He directed the unlikely hit ''Jolly Fellows'' (1934), which had the backing of Maxim Gorky and the personal approval of Stalin. Alexandrov went on to create other propagandistic musicals, including '' Volga, Volga'' (1938), which details the story of peasants who boat to Moscow on the River Volga to become singers. These musicals starred his wife, Lyubov Orlova. Dana Ranga
Dana Ranga (born 1964 in Bucharest) is a Romanian writer and film director, currently living and working in Berlin. Life Dana Ranga was born in 1964 in Bucharest. Initially, she studied medicine at the Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy. After she left for Berlin, she studied journalism, art history and film theory at the Free University Berlin. She now works in Berlin as a filmmaker, author and poet. Her debut production '' East Side Story'' (1997) received an award at the Marseille Festival of Documentary Film in 1998. The documentary film ''Story'' (2003), about astronaut Story Musgrave received awards at the film festivals in Marseille (2003), Leipzig (2003) and Houston (2004). Afterwards, Dana Ranga produced the documentary ''Cosmonaut Polyakov'' (2007), part two of the space trilogy. Socialist Realism
Socialist realism is a style of idealized realistic art that was developed in the Soviet Union and was the official style in that country between 1932 and 1988, as well as in other socialist countries after World War II. Socialist realism is characterized by the depiction of communist values, such as the emancipation of the proletariat. Despite its name, the figures in the style are very often highly idealized, especially in sculpture, where it often leans heavily on the conventions of classical sculpture. Although related, it should not be confused with social realism, a type of art that realistically depicts subjects of social concern, or other forms of "realism" in the visual arts. Heißer Sommer
''Heißer Sommer'', aka ''Hot Summer'' (USA), is a 1968 East German musical film. A 2001 video release promotes the film as "The East German '' Grease''" although perhaps it is closer in concept to the 1963 British movie '' Summer Holiday'' which starred Cliff Richard. Plot A group of girls and a separate group of boys come across each other whilst travelling from Leipzig to Ruegen Island for the summer holidays. Initially trying to ignore and avoid each other, the two groups find themselves billeted close by, relaxing together, enjoying each other's company and the resulting relationships that develop. The movie deals with the conflicts of each relationship in the group by singing and dancing their way through each situation including a brief encounter with the VoPo's - the police. The majority of the film is shot on Ruegen Island which at the time, was a popular destination for East Germans and today is popular with travellers the world over. ''My Wife Makes Music'' (german: Meine Frau macht Musik) is an East German musical film directed by Hans Heinrich. It was released in 1958, and sold 6,052,050 tickets. It was shot at the Babelsberg Studios in Potsdam. The film's set's were designed by the art director Oskar Pietsch. The film was very popular at the box office, but drew criticism from East Germany's communist authorities who regarded its style as too close to western commercial cinema.Feinstein p.141 Synopsis It was a revue film in which an East Berlin housewife is discovered and turned into a singing star by an Italian, much to her husband's disapproval.
