East Point, Northern Territory
East Point is an inner northern suburb of the city of Darwin, Northern Territory of Australia. East Point, Lee Point and Point Charles all appear on Goyder's original plan of Port Darwin in 1869. This point, the easterly extremity of the entrance to Darwin Harbour has been used for a variety of purposes. It was the site of naval and anti-aircraft guns during World War II (1942–46), a post war golf course and currently a recreation reserve including a pony club and a war museum. Darwin ( ; Larrakia: ) is the capital city of the Northern Territory, Australia. The City of Darwin is a local government area of the Northern Territory, Australia. It includes the central business district of the capital, Darwin City, and represents two-thirds of its metropolitan population. The City covers an area of and, in June 2018, had a population of 84,613 people. History The first Town and District Council was formed in 1874. The Darwin Town Council was created in 1915. From 1921 the five member Council had been elected on a ratepayer's franchise. In 1930 the Mayor and Councillors resigned in protest against the re-introduction of adult suffrage. Electoral Division Of Fannie Bay
Fannie Bay is an electoral division of the Legislative Assembly in Australia's Northern Territory. It is located in the inner northern suburbs of Darwin, with its current boundaries including the suburbs of Fannie Bay (from which it derives its name), Parap, East Point, The Narrows, The Gardens and parts of Stuart Park. It was first created in 1974, and is an entirely urban electorate, covering an area of 11 km². There were 5,473 people enrolled in the electorate as of August 2020. Fannie Bay has been an exception in Northern Territory politics, as it has tended to be neither marginal or safe for either party, with incumbent members of both parties having managed to easily hold the electorate for several years. History Although the origin of the name Nightcliff has always been surrounded by conjecture and controversy, the naming can be tracked back to 8 September 1839. History Coconut Grove is named for the grove of coconuts on the coastal fringe of the area. Fannie Bay is a middle/inner suburb of the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. Situated in the suburb is the Fannie Bay Gaol museum, Fannie Bay Race Track, Fannie Bay Oval the home of the Port Darwin FC and a monument to Ross Smith, captain of the Vickers Vimy, that on 10 December 1919, was the first aircraft to fly from England to Australia in less than 30 days. Adjoining the suburb is the East Point Reserve, containing Lake Alexander, a Military Museum and gun emplacements from the Second World War. Darwin Military Museum
The Darwin Military Museum was originally established as an artillery museum by the Royal Australian Artillery Association (NT) Inc (RAAA) to exhibit photographs and artefacts from Darwin, Northern Territory, Darwin's history during World War II. The Museum now has a large exhibit of items from the war, including Navy, Army and Air Force items from Australian, US and other armed forces. It is set amongst concrete gun emplacements and other fortifications in an area that was one of the most heavily fortified parts of Australia during the war. At the peak around 1943, there were over 110,000 armed forces personnel based in Darwin and nearby areas. It was from Darwin that General Douglas MacArthur launched his campaign to liberate Manila and more generally to reclaim the Philippines from Japanese occupation.
